Blue Dial 15400 - Should I do it?

It would be for a 2018 allocation from a boutique (I'm not sure when it would actually arrive).

Do you think I should be able to get a small discount?

Would I loose my shirt on it if I sell/trade in the future if I pay list price ($17.8K)?

As you all know, it's a beautiful piece ...

Worth getting. Even if you have to sell it again, you will not loose much for this model I reckon.

If you're already thinking about selling it don't do it unless you absolutely love it. Forget the hype for a moment, compare it with other colors side by side if possible, and pick the one you love.

If you like it buy it. You shouldn't lose much, like myporsche said, I ended up comparing the colours and bought the silver dial even though I was set on the blue.

You won't get a discount, but you won't lose your shirt on it in future either (you'll lose a bit, more the sooner you sell of course).

Thanks for all the comments! The picture I posted is from last April when I had an opportunity to try one on at the boutique.

I didn't mean to infer that I would purchase it with the intention of flipping it. I take comfort in "buying right" ... I like knowing that I will have good value retention when buying a piece. I just wanted to confirm that is the case with a Blue Dial 15400 at MSRP.

Buy it if you love it.

Resale won't be too bad, but you'll have a hard time finding buyers with that kind of cash ready on hand.

You won’t get a discount but AP gives some cool gifts, if you buy from the boutique.

Thanks again, guys. I spoke to my Sales Specialist at the NYC boutique and was told they don't discount boutique only pieces. Either way, I put down a deposit ... the wait has begun!

Recent blue dial 15400 sales seem to have been at or above MSRP. But that's up a nice amount (~15%?) from 6+ months ago when they were trading below MSRP. Seems like a little bit of a stainless steel bubble.

Also, the blue dials always seem to go for a few grand more than the other dial colors on the secondhand/gray market. IMO the blue dial is the only one I'd by at a boutique (at MSRP). 15%-20% off seems doable on the other colors. Value retention wise, paying MSRP for a the blue is pretty much equal to getting a 15%-20% discount on the other colors.

That's interesting, when I was there back in December they didn't ask me for a deposit to put me on the list for a blue dial 15400, just my name and contact info. Said a deposit will be needed at a later time. I wonder if they changed the way they're handling it or if my sales guy didn't give me the full info?

Value propositions, speculation, resale, future value, retention, watch bubbles, historical price analysis. What happened to just buying the watch that you like? It's definitely not the criteria I use when deciding on these beautiful horological marvels. But hey OP if all that analysis makes you feel better about the watch all the power to you, Congrats on a beautiful piece.

That sounds right. I put my name down on the list in early 2017. My Sales Specialist said he would get back in touch with me when they were able to start accepting deposits for 2018 allocations. So it seems like as people move up the list at a certain point they accept deposits for their expected allocations. They will not take an unlimited amount of deposits if they do not have the pieces incoming within a reasonable amount of time.

Maybe I wasn't very clear. I love the piece. Although I haven't owned one yet, I've been a fan of AP for a while (I was at the 40th anniversary party for the RO in 2012 at the Park Ave Armory). I visit the NYC boutique a few times per year and have always gravitated toward the 15400. But once I decide I want a particular watch, I go into research mode and make sure I make an informed purchase decision. I don't like overpaying just because I want something.

It wasn't long ago when white/black dials could be had for ~$12K. The MSRP was still $17,800. Trade-in to a reputable dealer might have been $10K at that time. Would I still want one? Yes. Would I pay MSRP at the boutique? No. I'd get one from a "trusted seller".

I get more enjoyment out of this hobby knowing I'm not loosing my shirt if I want to trade a watch as my collection evolves. I don't look at my watches as an investment and I'm not a short-term flipper. I just like "buying right".
