Yet another Aussie :)

Greetings everyone from Newcastle Australia.

I came across this forum as I have a Unicorn watch I was after information on as I want to sell it. I bought it about 20 years ago at a antique market.

I'd love some advise about how best to go about getting it priced... do people just begin randomly posting to make up their 16 posts to put a watch up for sale? Seems a bit silly.

Any help appreciated
Cheers
Melanie

Welcome Melanie - can't answer the value question but would think you would find a forum spot to post pics and ask questions regarding the watch, etc. Seems you would want that before being able to post to the for sale section anyway as that's not the place to ask what it's worth but what you want.

Thanks everyone for warm welcome.

I've really enjoyed reading your forum; so many interesting stories and so much joy of Rolex :)

I am dubious about the Rolex-ness of my watch, but any light you may be able to shed on my piece would be of interest and appreciated. Most of what I know is based on rumour.

As I mentioned I’m interested in selling it, but it is obviously difficult as I don’t really know what it is I have!

I bought it from a market in Melbourne in the early 90s.

I’ve never seen another one like it.
- 15 Jewel Unicorn movement
- Rose gold Handley case and watch body is silver
- note that it is currently not running (although it was when i bought it) the movement seems to have ceased. I haven’t wanted to get it looked at until i knew what i was dealing with

To summary

see Alcan’s post on this forum:
“Unicorn watches were originally made by Rolex Watch Co and marketed as an independent line, primarily to Australia. The Unicorn name was patented in 1919, Rolex used it until circa 1933. During this time they were fitted with Rolex movements.

and starlessiris post on the watchuseek forum in which he debates the following claim:
in the 1920's Rolex produced the 'Unicorn' brand specially for the Australian market.
It was meant to be sold and marketed at a cheap and reliable timepiece.
During this period of time, Rolex still supply the movements and watch case for the 'Unicorn' watch.
That's why you still find the early 'Unicorn' watch still bears the Rolex movements and case.

Unfortunately after a period of time, Rolex deemed it's too expensive. So they decided to source movements from other companies and made 'Handley' (watch case manufacturer from Australia) to be their supplier of their cases.By this time,1930's they only use15 jewels movement. Some are stamped with the 'Unicorn' trademark while most are not.

Sorry about the shocking photos

Perhaps an administrator could move this somewhere more useful for me.
I did try to edit the post for typos/graphic size but I don't have an edit option =D
