Bark, meet Monty

Back in November, I started looking for a special pen to "mark" a special occasion (pun attempted ).

It had to be black. It had to be yellow gold. So after much consideration (about 3 seconds, I decided on Mont Blanc. A few other brands came to mind in those few seconds, but I decided to go with my first instinct. A related thread here turned me on to the 75th Anniversary Special Edition Meisterstuck, made in 1999. I checked out the prices online and at the stores, then shopped around on the "bay". The prices were much higher than I was willing to spend on this, so I decided to set up a search on the "bay" and wait for a good deal.

That deal happened last week: A good deal from a "pen flipper" with thousands of great feedback and a 100% return policy... a couple of people had left feedback indicating that he made good on that policy for them at the same time questioning the authenticity. With their return policy and the protections as a buyer from that site, I decided it was an acceptable risk. Besides, I work very close to the Montblanc store in the Houston Galleria.

I picked up the box from the Post Office this morning on the way to work (it required a signature - that's another story...). Since I've read that Mont Blanc pens are faked a lot like Rolex watches, I took the box I received to the Montblanc store during lunch and asked if they could perform an authentication service.

The guy was very polite and was happy to oblige, so we moved over to a table under a bright light. He checked out the box, which was complete with the original CD and papers and said that looked good. He pulled out the pen and felt the weight. he slid his hands around the pen and and visually inspected the pens details. He concluded that is was definitely an authentic 75th Anniversary Special Edition Meisterstuck (as advertised).

I told him how much I paid and asked if I got a good deal. He confirmed that I got a good deal for this Special Edition that hasn't been made in years, not to mention I have the bonus of the box, CD and papers. He was even nice enough to give me a Mont Blanc bag!! If they ever make the Etoile de Montblanc with yellow gold accents, I will definitely give this guy the sale.

So my month's long search is over and I am happy to join the Mont Blanc owners club... Bark, meet Monty.

Maybe you could commission a special order for a fountain pen with bark from MontBlanc. Who knows there could be a whole market out there waiting for one of those!!!

Very nice, congratulations.

I think MB made several versions of the 75th Anniversary Edition. Is it a Chopin or Mozart?

This one is the "Special" edition. It came in a rose gold limited edition as well.
