Wound or Unwound?

I rotate watches. During long periods can I keep my rolex unwound for say years. Or do I have to keep it wound every two days? Will not winding cause any damage to the rolex?

No no damage will be caused but when I had a larger collection, I would wind what I haven’t worn once a month or so, just to keep the gears running and the lubrications moving through the system.

Side note, it was precisely this that made me realize the collection was getting too large if I was only wearing one watch perhaps 4/5 weeks out of every year. Started to feel like I was a museum curator rather than someone who likes to wear and enjoy watches.

An unwound watch is incurring zero wear, a wound watch is incurring maximum wear.

Decades ago, when watch oils were made with whale fats and other organics, they could stiffen up when left for long periods. For some reason these tales from bygone days still linger in our modern world.
