I have both and wear my Speedmaster far more often. I rarely wear the Sub. It's fine; it's just not great. I did wear it non-stop for ~15 years. But I now prefer the Speedy.

But for you, I suggest you get the Sub. It's a special watch, and it's a Rolex, so perhaps better suited to a milestone birthday. Then sell your current Omega and roll the funds toward a Speedy. That would be my end-goal.

Good luck!

Go with the date

I personally would pick the sub. While Omega makes a great watch, I am more of a Rolex fan.

Owned both. Sold the speedy. If you have never owned a Rolex before it’s a watch that can’t be replicated with emotions that are brought out by wearing it, which no other watch can replicate (Patek can as well). To mark an important birthday or any big milestone it’s the crown or nothing. The sub will bring you a lot of joy.

Thanks all - good comments. I'm now thinking more Sea-Dweller 16600...

Was in this position in 2004 when I purchased the Seamaster and owned it for 2 days, then returned it and purchased what I really wanted - 14060m. This has been my one and done watch for 19 years.

A most interesting detour
A 5 digit Sea-Dweller is a mighty watch and hard to beat.

My oldest watch is a Submariner Date 16610 from 1989 - probably the only one I one that I would not consider selling or trading. My newest watch is a Speedy Pro Moonwatch cal. 3861 and Hesalite. It is a super watch, great to have in the collection.

If you have a chance at the Submariner, take it Unless that Omega SeaMaster you have has sentimental value, get rid of it and use the funds toward a cal 3861 Speedy Pro.

At any rate, you are probably more likely to have easier cracks at adding a Speedy, and if you can afford it and can actually get it I would 100% say get the Sub.

Seadweller - any version - smashes the submariner. You could have a lifetime 2 watch collection with a Seadweller + Speedy. Add a Datejust and you basically have the perfect 3 watch collection. I own more, but the others are just occasional items. The Seadweller + Speedy + Datejust is the Pareto of wrist time.

I think a sub date is a little more practical for everyday wear, but both are incredible pieces.

I have two Subs and just bot a hesalite Speedy a few months ago.

If I had to pick one I would probably go with the sub. The date is probably the most usable complication and I do miss it on no-date watches.

The Speedy is awesome. For my relatively small wrist it is super comfortable - at least as comfortable as my Subs. It is quite accurate (+2 secs per day) and I think looks great. I have been wearing it a lot.

Good luck on your choice. Both are great watches.

If you're talking about a Moonwatch, I'd go with that over the Sub. It's a classic and I feel is the more wearable and versatile of the two. If it's any other Speedmaster, I'd go with the Sub.

Don’t go grey for a 124060 they’re easy enough to get if you talk to a few ads

Basically I don't understand how you can compare or hesitate between a versatile automatic diver and a perfectible manual chrono in contact with water...
Simple criteria or an orientation of use, and the choice is made if you cannot or does not want to have both !

Regarding the tastes, it is a classic. But I think we get tired of it, it's pretty dull in the end. The Sub too but it has better materials and this really usable side.
I'll take a Zénith El Primero anyday instead, to name just one example.

Sub for me. I have two Omega Seamasters and one Sea-Dweller. Rolex wins overall for me and is where I'd put my money if I was choosing between Speedmaster and Submariner.

Interesting development

If you have the ability to try one on at a gray dealer you might want to consider that. It’s a great watch (it was my first Rolex), but it does wear a bit top heavy and fit can be trickier for some

I tried a few on at a local grey dealer yesterday and pulled the trigger on one today from a well-reviewed online dealer because the local ones were more expense and looked over-polished. So, incoming!

You got a 16600? Congratulations. That's exciting, and a great choice.

I did! My wife is making fun of me because my birthday isn't until the end of December but the one I found seemed head and shoulders above many of the other examples I was looking at in a number of ways. We'll see if that bears out once it arrives.

For me, I would buy the Submariner and flip the Seamaster to buy the Speedy. Good luck with your decision.

This is exact what I did! And although the plan was to get one 2-3 years after another it turned out I managed to get them in the same year!

Getting one will always have you wishing the other, if not right away, then some time later.

For me the only question was which one to get first
