What's the point of this lume?

I am enjoying being a new Rolex owner and finally bothered to look at my
11420 in a dark closet.

sure, the 8 hour markers with luminous material glow - but, the slender hands have maybe a hair's width of luminova on them.

There's no way you could actually read this in the dark. I don't care, exactly, but, why pretend?

the fat, highly lumed sport watches make sense to me...

Does anyone actually find the lume on dj / op / ak's useful?

This is my biggest complaint about my Sub Date 16610. When fully "charged" the lume is only truly usable for less than an hour. Since I don't dive, I've often wondered if the lume somehow works better in dive conditions. It's really frustrating when I go to a movie and can't easily read my watch after just 30 minutes. All that being said, I love my watch!

As my wife said to me on our wedding night, "Oh, well. I guess a little something is better than nothing at all."

Well, the lume fills it's spot IMHO, but it could last longer, like on many other watches. Omega has some awesome lume, so do JLC.

The main problem is not so much the lume although Rolex lume is not the best around. Is just like you said lume glow come from the total surface area more surface area the brighter the glow. But lume glow is way down the list in priorities for me when buying a watch.

That was the biggest disappointment coming from an Omega to the GMT IIc. The lume is pretty much unreadable in the middle of the night, or the pre-dawn if outside. Its a shame Rolex doesn't do a better job on this.

Glad I am not the only one who has noticed this.

I don't really care -- but, on the dressier watches, it has so little effect that I wonder why they bother.

i was worried about this for an old 14060 and it was a slight influence on my decision to buy a new model. even then i was worried, but i can see lume on my new 114060 when i wake up in the wee hours. and my wife has even remarked she reads it when she wakes up pre-dawn. I LOVE THIS THING!

should have been a cool lume shot but i will leave that to the experts.

If you want all night lume, then Omega sets the standard. I am not sure why Rolex can't do the same thing? Their Maxi dial is plenty big enough to have a good lume. Perhaps that will be a Rolex upgrade down the road??

my 114060 (with that reflective inner ring) is like a torch when well charged. i've heard newish omega lume is awesome, and still better than rolex, but with my watch, it does job 'til dawn. i'm v. happy and sure i ain't the only one. i also have heard it is all about the surface area.

Rolex knows how to do a good lume. The Pelagos is one of the best I've ever seen.

Exactly what I was going to say. Tritium tube lume. I've ordered a Ball Lady Conductor and hope to share some pics in the coming weeks!

I have never had a problem with Sub or Speedie. Now I would say my SD is the best and don't really know why it would be better than any of my three Subs in the past.

You have to take in consideration how old is the watch. I have an F serial 16600 and when I go to bed at around 11 i wake up at 4 and the lume is still strong.

I totally concur. The lume on my PO is super, it's like in 3D. On my M serial SD it's an after thought, I can hardly see the minute hand at all after 10 min or so. I use my watch in low light situations a lot and the SD is such a disappointment.
My PO's lume is vibrantly visible walking in a room from sunlight and have gotten complimented twice when I walked into a dark movie theater.
....sigh....Rolex
