Thoughts on this white 1680?
It’s a 3.8M case. I believe this time period was a transition time between the red and white dials. Looks like a mark I dial. The case is thick but looks like it’s in fairly rough shape. The left upper lug has a strange looking chamfer (poor polishing job or dent?).

Should have open 6 and 9 on the date wheel.

Service top hat by the looks of the crystal beveling. Can't tell about the dial since it's still a little blurry. But I love it!

One of the MANY little nuances about vintage Rolex. Not all the 6s are open:

Outside of a good looking dial, if I was buying I’d like a better case, an intact pearl, authentic crown, crystal and era correct bracelet. Can’t comment on any of those latter items.

Good catch...now that you mention it the crown's profile isn't like mine, this one is different.

good catch with the crown! Looks like a twin lock with 3 dots!! For my part a service crystal or missing pip is not a deal breaker, these are easily sourced parts as is a crown. I don't know what the seller is asking but it's a good looking sub with 40+ years of use behind it. check out Philips excellent thread on buying vintage Rolex, he adresses every aspect of what can be a confusing and uncertain process. Good Luck!!

I thought Whites started with 4.0m? Any other known examples of Whites in the 3.8m range?

This is my crown on a 5.2 serial production 1680. So the profile is a little different. I don't know if it's even a bother since production variations might have occurred. The more I look at yours the more I see the same style crown and all this is a much ado about nothing.

I certainly agree - my comment was about the things that were questions I’d want to have checked prior to a 5513 (especially one purporting to be a rarer model) - or any scarce vintage Rolex. This particular crown raised my eyebrows meaning it needed to be checked by someone like my watchmaker. But for this watch I can’t say much as it’s not in my hands. Same goes for the crystal - we can’t tell if it’s authentic or not. Plenty of non-Rolex crystals available from legitimate sources that some indie watchmaker could have inserted. Here’s another item - who’s to know about the tube? So my comment was aimed at the points one can’t determine by just looking at pictures unless there is a glaring red flag. Fortunately these things can be made right at the next service. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

I agree. I don't know enough to state anything other than something looks different from a photo. Lights, reflections and washouts in photos can deceive a lot of people. I hope the buyer gets what he wants and enjoys it everyday. I have this 1680 on my wrist and love it a lot. |

look at my 1680 from 1978 ..... and look at the crown guards, that's how they should look!
