Panerai 690 or 946

Hi all... I swore I would never do this, but I truly can’t decide. I have the opportunity to purchase a new 946 or a pre-owned 690 in mint condition. One from a boutique and the other from a trusted AD. Both dials are stunning although I would give the slight nod to the 690. The 946 has the GMT which for me is a useful complication. Price is about equal. Has anyone gone through a similar experience with these two references? Like I said, I usually trust my own opinion, but on this one I am really torn. Any thoughts out there? Thanks

690 is almost always the right answer for any Panerai, especially between these two.

Of the new blues, I’ve seen all but the 932 in real life, and they didn’t do much for me. I don’t know, for me, the dial color style didn’t seem “Panerai” to me... YMMV.

Good luck with your choice!

Thanks... the dial on the 690 is stunning. It’s tough when you can’t compare them side by side, but I’m starting to lean more towards the 690.

Thank you

It’s one of the best watch moves I’ve made. I’m still loving this one as much as the first day I bought it.

Cru and Paul were the primary instigators/ advisors. I owe it all to them

I would definitely say the 690...in addition to it being the best 1940 case Panerai has ever produced, it also gives you the added benefit of holding its value probably a bit more than 946...

As others have stated the 690 is the way to go. The watch is beautiful and an easy wear even at 47 mm. The blue dial and hands work perfectly together. It will also hold it's value. I am an owner and could not be more pleased with it.

Yes... from Dan. Did you make the Grand Seiko event last night? Unfortunately, I couldn’t get there.

I went for just a few minutes as I had to conduct an interview for a potential partner at 5 in ft. Worth. I did get to say hi to dan and gang for a sec though. I tried on that 690...it’s sick... get it.

Thanks Brian... you all will probably laugh, but I went today and ended up not buying it. It’s a stunning watch, but for some reason it didn’t speak to me the way it did the other day when I first tried it on and I decided to pass. On a postitive note, I did pick up a mint PAM 24 C serial, tritium lume with the slightest bit of patina. It was love at first sight! So if anyone is interested, there is a 690 out there waiting for a new home. Thanks for all of the commemts

Found these pics on Instagram from mrhobijamindonesia

Liked that they are shot from same angle and you can see the difference between the 690 and the 932

690

932

I might live to regret this but OP Singapore offered me a 690 and it is truly stunning. I didn’t go for it because I had one slot left in my box, which was reserved for my, um, 533.

Anyhoo, 690 all day every day. Thing is, if you’re unsure, go for the 690 anyway and if you decide it’s not for you then you’ll have no trouble moving it on and you’re unlikely to lose much money at all, if any. Can’t say that for too many Panerai.
