I've had AP and still own Rolex but the past week I have been hanging out in that Patek subthread similar to OP. I have a question for you guys - Is the 5196 too docile to start with? My ultimate fantasy is to have a 5140g (second hand of course). Current collection is 116610ln, 116618ln, 116515ln oysterflex and likely to keep all.
How many of you guys started with the calatravas when getting into PP or did you all go and start right at the nautilus and the grand comps? |

Nothing wrong starting w a 5196 if you can live w the small movement. My interest in Patek was triggered in 2006 by the launch of the 5711, 5712, 5800, and 5980. Still remember reading the watch magazines back then but somehow I didn't pull the trigger. Instead I got a 3998P Calatrava as my first Patek. Only in 2018 I added a 5711 blue. |

Rolex--->PP
is like Mercedes--->Bentley Many fine products from each company but the hierarchy is unmistakable: two are for the 1% while the others are for the .0001%. |

You need at least one Rolex to wear when you have to send your Patek to Geneva for 6 months for a service.

A Rolex steel sports watch is ~$10,000 - $12,000 now. A PP Calatrava and some other models are $12,000 - $20,000. I don't think that's really that big a jump? I feel like if you can afford a $10k watch then you can definitely afford a $20k watch...
