Why Everyone Is So Obsessed With Mid-Century Watches?

Perennially stylish and perfectly functional, the oldies are hard to beat.

"I want to love modern watches. I really do. I promise I’m not one of those middle-aged grumblers who think that anything created after about 1968 is automatically garbage. I like my art, architecture and car design so modern it makes me uncomfortable at first, but I don’t want anything so edgy on my wrist. The watches I covet are all vintage, and the new releases I’d consider buying are mostly retro reissues. Given how classic-watch values have risen and watch brands are pillaging their back catalogs for inspiration, it seems I’m not alone..."

Using the article's premise, which available in 1968 or earlier vintage Rolex would you buy and wear regularly if it was reissued?

The problem: you can only have one.

My favorite design is the old Clint Eastwood root beer on jubilee. But I’d want it to be modern. Omega’s vintage inspired pie pan Globemasters are great.

That's easy for me to narrow down to two, but I would really have a hard time deciding between the 5510 big crown sub or 6542 GMT Master.

In the end, I might have to go with the 5510 if I can only have 1 grail. A 1675 could satisfy the need for a vintage 4-hander.

What makes my heart go thump thump is the visual of art deco-ish and 1940s design.

The problem is I don't really want the watches from that era because I don't like patina and barnacles on my watches and I don't want a 34mm watch.

So my preference is, an updated version of a classic design, or a cool retro art deco vibe to a piece.

But why do people want retro....because everything old is new again....

Everything comes back into fashion sooner or later.

For some reason I have always really Loved the Art-Deco Mid-Century period for a lot of different things.

There was a brand called Duesenberg watches that you can google that made some cool watches. Don't think they stuck around.

But just goggle art deco watches and there are some really cool designs that really float my boat. https://www.google.com/search?q=art+...w=1620&bih=902

A lot of new designs definitely have an art deco vibe to them.
