Is a Nautilus and a Royal Oak redundant in a collection?

Is it an overlap?

I have handled the 5711 and 15202 / 15500 and I feel like they all have similar wears and would be kind of hard to reason to keep both besides for fun collecting.

What do you guys think? Is it an overlap?

I have both 5711 and 15202st. They were designed by the same person, but they look quite different.

I have the 5711 and I wish I also own the 15202. Both spectacular watches.

Absolutely not redundant. They actually complement each other
Just get different dial colors

Redundant for me. Both are equally as nice but as Ken might say, “there can be only one”

Had them both, the WR of the 5711 allowed me to wear it much more.

But the 15202 fit my wrist better than any watch I have owned

Honestly, owning more than 1 watch is redundant isn’t it? Owning 10 watches is considered nuts! Yet most of us here probably do. From a collecting point of view there is no such thing as too many. Some people even collect the same watch with different dial variations. Ideally it’s a good situation to have both the Nautilus and the RO, those with even deeper wallet can add the VC overseas to complete the holy trinity of SS sport watches.

I prefer one of the two and have limited interest in adding the other one. But no, not too much overlap as they are very different looking watches. There are tons of people here with half a dozen or more Rolex sports watches. That's what I call redundant and boring beyond belief.

If you like the watches and they get wrist time then no, they are not redundant. If you wear only one significantly more and they other just sit then maybe I would look to move them for a watch that would get more wrist time.

Both the RO and Nautilus are stunning timepieces designed by Genta and imo can never be redundant in any collection.

i see it as redundant since both are very old designs. Perhaps try something new with a world-record thin movement instead imho. It's the modern equivalent and all that. Also look at pricing of the Bvlgari Octo FS with 100M WP rating and nice long warranty, you decide which is the real deal.

I have the 5712 and the 15500
Both wear different, the RO is more sporty/thick while the nautilus is more slim and elegant.
The good thing about mine is they are different dial color

This watch is fantastic. To try it on the wrist is to know it’s true!

Agree about the 100m and tremendous value compared to the alternatives.

The thinness is unbelievable.

Is owning 2 Rolexes an overlap? And, yet, most people on this site do. The Royal Oak and Nautilus have different case shapes, bracelets, dial layouts manufacturers, movements clasps etc. I think the question is: without one of each of these is it a collection?

Two different watches with two different design elements. Similarity is the fact that it came from one designer.

Rolex Sub, GMT, YM, Explorer 2 are far more similar between each other than these two.

If you have a Royal Oak, do you need a Nautilus, or is that a one way thing?

Never. Grab an Aquanaut to really complete the package.

I voted "not redundant," but conditionally.

If one was collecting Genta-designed/associated watches, then having both the AP and PP is not redundant.

If one is collecting super-popular watches of the present, then having both the AP and PP is not redundant.

Otherwise, I can see why they might be redundant in a collection...very similar DNA (strikingly attractive DNA at that) and niche. Wear what you have in good health

Having both just completes the great Genta design duo. No overlap in my opinion.

One way thing..... For me.....

I have nothing against AP Royal Oak......

My wife gave me wake up call in many way.....

Asking me questions.....

If you have a choice and only can pick one, which it would be.... Nautilus or Royal Oak......??

Me answer: Nautilus

If you have a Royal Oak would you still want the Nautilus....

Me answer: Yes, I still want the Nautilus......

Giving a choice of buying another watch when you already have a Nautilus would you still want a Royal Oak or another Nautilus or maybe even a Aquanaut..??

Me answer : Aquanaut would make a great pair with the Nautilus.....

If you can't get the Nautilus or Aquanaut, would you settle for the Royal Oak...??

Me answer: Most likely yes, but I really want the Nautilus or Aquanaut...lol...

If you have all three watch such as Nautilus, Aquanaut and Royal Oak..... And you can only take two watch for the long weekend wedding attendants... Which watch would you take and why.......??

Me answer: Nautilus for the wedding reception or anything that required formal wear..... Aquanaut for the bachelor party or anything that can be casual wear......

Last question...... If you have both Nautilus and Aquanaut... And can only keep one which would you pick and why.....

Me answer: Aquanaut because it fit my casual lifestyle......

After answering all those questions..... I know if I have a Royal Oak in my collection, it would hardly get any wrist time......

Both are iconic to their respective watch houses..that said yes they are similar but still very different in my eyes.

I suppose the question comes back to wether YOU feel they are redundant?
