I have a watch incoming in the next few days, and I told the AD he could show it but not let anyone try it on

In my my experience new Patek Philippe watches remain sealed until they are paid for. I suspect these were sold and probably in for a sonic clean or waiting to be sent to the service centre. Watches returning from service are also sealed and only opened on collection.

I know how hard it is see the waiting list models, so if mine are at the AD I always say they are free to show show other customers and let them try them on. I guess this guy did the same, or wait are those my watches.

That’s what I do. Actually I tell my AD let’s cut the seal when I pick it up.

With respect to the new allocated customer, I would politely decline trying on.....

I know I have sat in GT Porsche's allocated to other people at dealers that are way more valuable and awesome than a steel Patek. I mean as long as you don't break it who cares? We aren't talking about moon rocks here.

I harass strangers to try on their Patek’s so clearly I have no shame.

Not sure who the AD is but their MO is all wrong.

A Patek AD will always open the box (cut the seal) in front of you. Then scissor the second seal in front of you. It's part of the experience to know you are the owner of this watch and you're the first to touch it since leaving Geneva.

If I try it on I'll just get too hungry. It's a no from me. I'll hold them, but that's about it.

Yeah, I don't like how this feels to me at all.

If it's a customer allocated watch, no one should touch or try it on unless the customer has passed on it.

You did well to politely decline. But on the AD's part, they should've never offered. The last time an AD did that with one of my pieces (many, many years ago), and I found out about it, I moved onto a different AD.

I don't want your skin flakes embedded in my bracelet links.

And if someone takes my GT2 RS for a test drive, other than the tech handling the PDI, and I find out about it, there'll be hell to pay (there was, once, and they also lost my business).

Some of us like to be the first to touch brand new things that we paid a lot of $$$ for. :)

To each their own, of course!

Very reckless for an AD to do this with these bezel models, on a CE Rolex I can more understand it, but still no customers want their new watch to be tried on by others first, but seller's are so powerful now some just don't care.

The only solution to this problem is for manufactures to increase production so everyone can have a watch to try on and buy!

I only buy shoes direct. I've long stopped buying stuff off the shelf.

Same with jeans. I like ripping open the plastic bag that they come in.

I'm spending $100k on a watch that's labeled "new" (and not vintage). I don't want your skin flakes.

You can keep 'em!

This is why some (I think FP Journe used to do this, not sure if they still do) have dummy models for you to try and explore the fit.

Rolex has dummy models too. Just difference is the weight as no movement in it. Just the "shell". They use these models on exhibitions.

Not much for an exhibition now since all the watches they show off are unobtainable. They're however loving that people can't get them.

When I got my Calatrava, I didn't want the display case/floor model and waited an extra two weeks for them to get me a sealed version as I wanted the strap in pristine condition, I didn't like the "kink" the strap had from how it was displayed. It sort of makes me laugh when I look at the strap today and its wear from being my daily.

But, I think as long as our watches will be from super limited allocations and long waitlists and curated AD relationships then we should be able to expect to be the first to handle our long awaited orders.

...but I'd trade away the waitlists, sealed, double sealed, outer box, uncut hang tag string, ... re-sell oriented craziness for good old retail stores we could browse inventory, try things on and maybe even buy on impulse.

Gents. You've all missed the point with 5167r.
The strap is still uncut and clasp isnt connected.
You cant properly try it on!
