Birthday Present Advise Needed, Air King or Explorer II

Hello, I want to give a nice birthday girft to someone special to me, and that person is not into watches. He is turning 27 this Sunday and I was debating between Air King 116900 or Explorer II with either black or white dial.
Help me out to pick one.
Thank you.

I vote Exploerer simply because I dislike the design of the new Air King. I think the Explorer II is more timeless.

I agree with above the Explorer 2 is classic. Perhaps a downsize to 41mm and new movement are the only changes I see coming for a good long while. The green and yellow on the AirKing dial is an acquired taste I think. The AirKing would be a knockout in a white dial/black hands and marker version (minus the yellow and green). I think it needs traditional hour markers as well to remain fresh for the long-run.

How about Explorer 1 or a Submariner?

Exp II black dial is a classic choice and age appropriate. It can be dressed down on a RubberB for weekend adventures and worn on steel when desk diving in a suit .

Also consider the Explorer 214270 or OP 114300.... these have a wider appeal and may be more suitable as gifts. Having said that, it really depends on the recipient, their likes, dislikes, passions and what you feel will sing to them...

Silly question from me: If he's not really into watches, why a) buy him an expensive watch and b) bother about which one to buy if he's possibly not going to care either way ?.

Out of those two, Explorer 2 i guess.....it's more digestible...

That's a big investment to give someone that is not into watches. Is into them at all? Does he at least like yours? To answer your question, what size wrist does he have? EXP II at 42mm is a relative large watch if you are thinking of buying a new one.

If they're not into watches I'd go with the AK!!! It's very attractive and eye catching. The Exp II is plainer looking. The added hand for 24 hour time will likely seem alien to them unless they do frequent travelling.

A most excellent gesture. However, I'd try and find out what your friend likes before dropping that amount on something he's not into.

Out of your two choices, I'd go Exp II all the way. However, perhaps consider an EXP I and Submariner, too.

Good luck.

I may be in the minority, but I’m a huge fan of the Air-King. It’s on my short list and even though it doesn’t get much love, I love that it’s different from everything else in the lineup.

+1 Air-King

I gave my son my Exp II when he was about 27. He’s super hard working and responsible or I wouldn’t have. I also like my old air king.

For someone who is 27 I cannot think of a better choice than a white dial (polar) Explorer 2.

Perhaps a DJ41 as the other 2 may be acquired taste. Hell of a gift whatever you choose!

Air King! It’s youthful and quirky at the same time. Once he has settled into expensive watches, then the other Rolex sports can come into the picture.

For a gift to someone who isn’t into watches, Exp 1 may be an awesome choice. May in fact spark an interest. If you’ve ruled that out and are set on either Exp 2 or AK, I would choose AK.

The 216570 Explorer II with black dial is a perfect all around watch.

Explorer 2! I would hesitate giving a gift of one to someone not really into watches though it would be a really nice gift. I kind of liken it to giving a dog as a gift, there is a certain amount of commitment that goes along with a nice watch such as insurance and service costs. Along with this there is the real possibility in this smart phone world that they will be annoyed that it stops and needs to be reset when not wearing.

Between the two, I’d choose the Explorer II. White. It’s a more useful watch and I think it’s better looking. But, it’s a big watch—I think it wears larger than its 42mm size. I’d look at an Explorer I—excellent choice as well.
