I'm expecting the birth of my first child this Nov, I plan to buy explorer 1 for later on pass to him 18 years later.. since Rolex sport now are hard to obtain, any idea of what model? Currently I owned subs ceramic date, Tudor BB ETA, and omega speedy chocolate dial... But looking at the new root beer..wow birth year also...but maybe need to wait how many years. ...

I did the same for my son who is expected October. In anticipation I bought a SubC and recently was lucky enough to score a Daytona. The others I was considering were a Speedy Pro or Santos 2018...IMO all classics and having any as a birth watch to pass down would have been amazing.

The Exp 1 is a fantastic choice. I’m sure you could get one before November to have it in time for the big incoming :)

i got a GMT LN with the intent to give to my first son when my wife was pregnant with him. I wear it now and he gets it later. IMO you should get something simple and classic. No colored bezels, TT etc as a simple looking Rolex will always go with anything.

Explorer I is a good choice but if it was me i would do a GMT LN or a sub C (either date or without)

Totally agree, well said! Timeless classics are timeless classics for a reason:) GMT LN should def be considered.

except the fact that giving a watch to an 18yr old and a ceramic bezel might be a plus. IMO the explorer or OP are more "grown up" looking where as a a diver or GMT would look equally good on all ages. No way i would wear an OP at 18. I would now though.

Been through this exact process myself. Buy whichever watch you like and want to wear. It'll be special to him because it's "Dad's watch".

Sadly, it's unrealistic to think you can know what your son will value in eighteen years; come to think of it, what will we value in eighteen years ?
Life changes so much, so fast. Maybe no-one will wear mechanical watches in 2036. We can't know.

they said that about cars 40 years ago and they still dont fly

IMO mechanical watches will at and minimum be retro and popular because of that, similar to vinyl records. You don't need vinyl in any practical sense, but they are back in a big way. I have an easier time finding records today than 10 years ago for sure. A mechanical watch is just as unnecessary even today but purists prefer it.

If you’re going to buy an explorer, I’d go for the polar. You could also hang onto your SubC and pass that along, it’ll always be a classic.

I would say get something from this years Bassel, that would be the same year as your son's birth year and could make it that much more special

I plan on wearing one of my Rolexes in 18 years while wandering the globe on adventures. So there will be at least one. I like the idea of an 116710LN too.

Hate to say simply because of the hype, but the Pepsi is a watch reborn this year, and is likely to be a classic. I bought a Rolex Sub ceramic in 2012 for the same reason. I wanted a watch I knew I would wear and like, but also he would know it had been on the planet since he was born.

Strange but made sense to me.
