Trade aquanaut towards complicated piece?

Hi all,

I currently own a 5167 and am considering whether I should use it to trade towards a complicated Patek. Front runner is a 5960P blue dial but also thinking of a 5396R blue dial or a 5940R.

Whilst I love the aquanaut (in particular how it goes under the radar) and could consider a purchase without selling I am asking myself whether it really makes sense to keep the aquanaut and obviously now would be a good time to realise an unexpected gain (I don’t like the idea of having watches I’m not wearing and already struggling a bit at the moment with 4 watches but have never sold anything before so a bit of a difficult decision.)

I’m not sure it makes sense to keep the aqua as whilst it is WR and a bit more sturdy than the pieces I’m considering, ultimately I wear my GMT master mostly when at the beach or doing sports.

I would not consider trading any of the other watches I have as my vacheron was a gift from my wife (and is the most beautiful watch I currently have) and think a sturdy Rolex is indispensable.

Any thoughts on trading or not and the models I’m considering would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Erik

If you want to start enjoying Patek's area of excellence which is their complications, I would recommend it. I owned a 5711 and a 5127 previously, and picked up an Annual Calendar as my first complication.

Patek did invent both the Annual Calendar and the Perpetual Calendar, so those are both good first choices.

I love my 5167 - one that gets a large share of wrist time in a crowded collection. I would recommend adding whichever complication watch you want and seeing how it goes - if you find yourself not wearing the aqua, then consider selling. I think the 5167 will continue to enjoy high resale value for the next few years.

Unless you have a rolex or all round piece that you can wear anywhere, you will miss the 5167. It's such an understated wear anywhere piece. Basically its like a calatrava with water resistance and on rubber...so nice

If that’s what floats your boat then absolutely. Make sure you get what it’s worth. Easy to get hosed when trading. And by that I mean almost all trades mean you get hosed!

Add, don't sell or trade. The 5167 is a keeper.

What about a 5164? You get a complication, but stay in the aquanaut family

Sounds like a good idea, get a comp or two by all means.

I like the 5164 upgrade idea (assuming one can even secure the piece). Can't go wrong with keeping the 5167 either and adding another (assuming the pocket book can absorb it). Personally, I like the idea of having as many PPs that sing to you.

Unless you have another steel sports watch I'd keep the 5167. It's a great watch for many occasions....including the pool. If you want a complication I'd either save for one or trade up to a 5164.

If you wear your Rolex more for sporty activities, then it kind of makes sense to sell the 5167 for the more complicated pieces you want. Both the 5960p and 5396r are beautiful pieces, with useful AC function and chrono for the 5960. I will go ahead with the upgrade if I were you.

I've had similar thoughts but haven't upgraded at the expense of trading or selling mine because IMO the Aquanaut is the best and most comfortable time and date casual watch out there right now. And the stealth factor allows me to wear it in many places and situations in which I would not take a Rolex. I say keep and add a complication - the ACs can be picked up for good prices now.

I went the opposite from PC, AC and word time to simple date and time of nautilus and aquanaut. I prefer the simple function and find them more useful .

Be a nice time to unload, but I know I’d never be able to get one again.

Although I do like the idea of an Annual Calendar, there is NOTHING like a Perpetual. The ability of this timepiece blows my mind. I also have a 5167, but my PC is very, very special. I though about the AC and skipped over to the PC and have no regrets.

I think 5960 is a fantastic piece. I would definitely flip the 5167. 5960 g with Blue face is just as sporty as 5167. I think it dresses up or down depending on strap. Given the finishing on the 5167, I would be very surprised if you wore it for any real physical activities.

I wear a Rolex 16600 or my Luminova Pam when working around the house.

Thanks all for the helpful opinions, below are some responses to your comments/questions (apologies if I've missed to reply to something)

Do I have a steel sports rolex for everyday use? Yes

What VC do I have? a yellow gold manual wind chrono

Why not keep the 5167 and add? I am thinking of this still but have noticed that even with 4 watches (current situation) it is difficult to get them all worn as much as they deserve and unless I treat the 5167 like a rolex it may be hard to see it getting that much wrist time should I have a more complicated Patek. Having said that, the option of keeping the 5167 for now and then see how it feels when I have another Patek may be something to consider. Until 12 months ago I would probably have been more in favour of simply adding to collection over time.

5167 will be difficult to get again? agreed and not making the decision easier

upgrade to 5164? not considering this as I tried the 5164 quite a few times and could have bought it when I got the 5167 but decided I preferred 5167

More generally, if I were considering to become a OWG the 5167 would be hard to beat as it has the elegance and slenderness akin to a calatrava but can be used for sports if one wishes to (even if not as sturdy as a Rolex SS). The question I guess is whether it makes sense to still keep as part of a small collection where I have a distinctly rugged watch (rolex) and some more traditional pieces on strap. Seems like this needs some more thinking.

that is the point that keeps on coming back to me - the 5167 has a beautiful finish but it means I feel it is not right to use it in the same way as my rolex that I couldn't care less whether it has some big scratches or not.

5960G is nice but would probably go for the 5960P if I went for the 5960 as I prefer the hands and feel the P dial makes it slightly more dressy but still easy to dress up or down.

Who not contact MrEleven? He’s in the UK and is currently looking for a 5167. Nice to cut out the middleman. https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=681097
