Explorer 1016 running 9 minutes fast a day
Hi,
I recently bought a 1016 Explorer from around 1981 from a guy I know and from whom I've purchased several pieces before. This one is running 540-560 seconds a day fast for about a week. I've checked it for magnatism with a compass and demagnetized it with a EuroTool demagnetizer that I've used before for watches that are running fast due to magnetism. This hasn't had an effect on the 1016. The guy I bought it from is unavailable to look at it for a few weeks for personal reasons, so I was wondering if this is the sort of thing any watch maker can address relatively quickly and cheaply or is it a full-service type of thing? Thanks, -jbl |

A dirty hairspring can cause it to run fast. The coils stick together as effectively shorten the spring. It may also just need adjusting. A dirty train usually results in a slower running watch, so at first I'd rule that out. My best guess is to check for possible oil on the hairspring.

I found a roached 7021 Tudor sub. It gained about 12 hours per day. I remember putting it on and it was SO damn fast
It needed to be completely overhauled and a new spring. Now it's excellent. |

same thing with a GMT - gained 15 minutes per hour LOL. The people are Tourneau were scared of it. They de-magnetized it, but that wasn't it...
Rolex guy handled it in a day, fear not. |
