Technically, its the Explorer before the Explorer that we know and love today. It is nice to have a 3 6 9 dial but most of these early Explorers did not have 3 6 9. These early Explorers were more of a dress watch than the sport watch that they are now.
These early 5501s also had Air King dials and could have come either way.

I have that watch. I believe I was told that they were made for the Canadian market and (as above) that they are sometimes referred to as "pre-Explorer".
Here's a note. On mine, before I owned it, the lacquer on the dial had cracked and partly peeled off, unfortunately taking some of the lettering with it. I'd be interested in knowing if that is a common problem with this reference. Thanks, Nick |
