I'm generally picky bordering on OCD about most things. Luckily, I'm blessed to not care about font minutia. My pick would always be the best preserved example across all variations.

Anyone know of any really good examples of the 16800 Matte, all original, with nice patina, and no corrosion?
I have been on most sites, and haven't seen anything that quite fits the bill yet.

Looks like a MKII, the equal symbol is different than the MKIII

I'd be curious to know too. All the later ones seem to have the pointed 4, mine included (8.1 million). I looked at a few on various sellers archives and all the late matte dials seem to be pointed too.

This is a very interesting topic. In the overview below, I arranged the dials in order of appearance (1979 - 1983). Please let me know what you think and which dial variation is considered which mark. The dials in the second row appear to be slight variations of the ones in the first row (bolder/thinner prints).

Also, check the area where the f of feet meets the v of Superlative. This could be an easy way to tell them appart.

a) 6,4 million
b) 7,1 million
c) 7,2 million (8,3)
d) 8,2 million

What about the "special dial"? It looks like the mark IV but it has low serial numbers, usually around 6.5 mil, which are from 1980. Most mark IV are from late 82 and 83. Also look at the bezel inserts, later versions have a different "5".

Ive also started to see variations in 14060/14060M dials. I think it will be the next up and coming sub to be a popular pick up since they are still priced very reasonably

I did a quick look into 2-liner dials recently and couldn't find any variation. It wasn't a massive sample size, but the dials I looked at were all the same

I don't have a picture here right now but it just looks the same as a mark IV but only it is a very early serial and therefore one of the first 16800's while the mark IV is the latest matte dial 16800. I don't know if you have Mondani's book Rolex Submariner Story but at page 112 the special dial is described.

Most variations I’ve seen so far are in the outer minute track.
