Thoughts on the "Cellini" ?

Hey all,
I'm interested in possibly aquring a Rolex Cellini... I haven't narrowed it down to a specific reference yet, but I like the sleek, classy look of quite a few models. I've been browsing the forum for a while now and haven't really seen any detailed threads on the Cellini line, (i'm sure if I scoured over the numberous pages I'd come across a couple...but ) Am I missing something, why no love for the Cellini?! I'd love to hear from a few wise folks before I break the bank! Thanks

~~*Also if it isn't an inconvenience for the owners of these apparently mythical timepieces, please feel free to share some rare footage!

The Cellini is a fine dress watch - but if it were me looking for a pure dress watch, I'd probably be looking at other brands like JLC to be honest. Rolex is known for their sports watches more than anything.

That being said, there's nothing wrong with the Cellini line. I just think better options exist at the same price point. If you like it, go for it!

I agree with Jot.

JLC or Zenith would be where I'd be looking in that category.

I'm not a fan of the Cellini line. I also agree with looking at JLC and Zenith. I also like GO.

The cellini prince is the only rolex made with an open case back (someone prove me wrong), that by itself is a unique feature

I am a HUGE fan of the price, but sadly it is out of my price point atm, and prepare yourself to take a huge hit if u ever plan to resell =)

IMHO The populous doesn't think they 'look like a rolex', and they are manual wind and aren't perpetual as in 'oyster perpetual'.

I think they are distinctive enough, and would love to see some footage too

If I were looking for a dress watch I would look at a JLC, Zenith, GP or GO. To me they seem to be more refined, of course that is something that is hard to quantify.

I quite like the Cellini line but much prefers their older models, something à la vintage Prince comes to mind.

I must agree that I'd probably go with another brand for a dress watch first though, I usually take a look at Rolex watches when I prefer a more versatile and a tad sporty looking watch. A cellini could come to mind but only if I already have an Oyster model first as I'd love my Cellini to be a second or third Rolex (something to be added to a collection rather than an only watch).

First of all Lucas, go with what YOU like, and want, if it turns out to be the Cellini, then more power to you and here is an early congratulations (DON'T FORGET TO POST PICS!!!! )

And I agree, there are some nice-looking models... but they never have been for me. If you are looking for a strictly dress-watch, how about a DateJust? One of the Very nice dial colors, or maybe even with diamonds....?

Very classy.

Thing is, I tend to find myself in large bodies of water. Ocean, rivers, lakes. Now, one may argue that its a dress watch and you wouldn't wear a Cellini outdoors. But the DJ/DD could do both.

If you like it, you should get it

I'm very fond of the Cellini line.

However, it's difficult to justify the cost of one, considering that I dress so casually.

And it's not just that I dress so casually, but also that I am so seldom in settings that such a watch would truly be at home.

I'm most fond of the Cestello.

Were you thinking new or used?
I am a fan of the Cellini range, and not just as a 'Dress' watch.
There are several Cellini models that will be available second hand at very attractive prices that look just great as an everyday wearer for the office or casual. They are found in both yellow and white gold and come on both tan and black bands. They have white/gold/black faces and you can choose whether you want it to look dressy or more casual.
They are quite robust and look very stylish and elegant for a lot less $ than you would pay for a second hand DJ in the same condition.
Do your research on Ebay - ("Rolex Cellini") where you will be able to see what is available in the Cellini range.

The prince versions come very close to Patek Philippe Calatrava prices, so I'd never pay that for a Rolex that will not hold it's value.

Really love this Prince, have seen them go for reasonable prices on the sales board. White gold, manual wind. Nicer decorated movement than other Rolexs. Rarer.

The Calatrava is a nice watch for sure, but a lot of people don't buy a watch with regard to it's resale value (me for a start). If I like it I will probably keep it permanently.
The Prince has real 'wrist presence' if you are not just buying for 'bragging rights' or resale.

Is go with the Calatrava as well hands down. But if I'm not mistaken, the PP is almost double $$ of the Rolex.

I would rather gamble the money away, donate it, throw it out of a car or set fire to the money, rather than spend it on a cellini....

Bit of a silly post. Any particular reason you hate them so much, that you'd would rather burn your money?

this is my "grail" watch (Google pic). Beautiful and simple. However, contrary to popular belief, for being an unpopular watch, they are not inexpensive.

Cellini is a line that really shines. I like them more than most of the other line or Rolex timepieces. They have a certain element of beauty and elegance that some watches lose.
