28th Anniversary

28 years ago today I purchased my Submariner 16800 brand new from AD Fleishman's Jewelry, Alexandria Va. Retail price was $1300 and he gave me $300 off for a total of $1000. In the 28 years I have worn it often, but not every day. I have worn it during scuba outings, sailing, fishing, working, and goofing off. In those 28 yrs. it has been serviced once in 2000. It keeps perfect time and spends it's off hours in a winder. It has seen girlfriends come and go, one wife that has stayed for 22 years, and 5 dogs that have come from rescues, two of which are sleeping next to me. I have gone through about 8 BMW Motorcycles, countless cars including 3 BMW's, 2 Corvettes, and countless boats. I still have my two closest friends and my Dad's Omega Constellation and Atmos Clock. Lots of stuff has happened in those 28 years, some I have forgotten, some I'd like to forget, but mostly good stuff. I consider my Rolex to not only be a great watch, but it also stores a lot of good memories.

I wish Rolex had a similar price point! I get sad when I see vintage advertisements with those triple digit prices.

Jim - I think you just wrote the next Rolex ad copy...

I can just imagine it in my mind as some voice recites those words as a montage of still shots pan, fade and pop in and out of the frame - it has everything you'd want in an ad: girls, dogs, bikes, cars, boats...and nostalgia!

Great story - and oh, by the way your $1K is now worth $4K-ish - what's not to like?

Wow, great story. Wearing a newly bought Rolex into vintagedom, here's to another 28 years! How about some more close up pics? Any certain scratches and or dings with special meaning?

Either waning interest in a bike thus frequent upgrading, or accident prone jaunts that result in upgrades. Or a combination of the two most likely :)

Great post thanks for sharing!

How many years have you used a winder when your sub is not in use?

Thanks very much guys/gals. I never had a BMW wear out, and thankfully, I never had one go down, but I always was able to find one that I thought was better than the one I had.

Glad I didn't do that with my Sub, and I wish I still had my 1971 BMW R75/5. I paid the same for both of them. The R75/5 & Submariner.

R75/5
R90/S
R100/RS
K75/S
R1200C
R1150RS
R1150R

BMW last just fine (break, they do) but i for one was put off by the extreme service costs out of warranty, not to mention the rampant incompetence by the technicians ... which was encouraged by BMW because they would put the techs on the clock for every job and not allow for deviation = sloppy, incomplete work... and the aggravation is passed onto the customer in repeat visits for the same problem.

ducati's are awesome, if only they had a larger network for service during travel here in the states.

in a comparison to service of rolex vs bmw...
rolex tells you it will be about $600 and at pick up adds perhaps a hundred for unexpected parts (reasonable as needed)
vs
bmw tells you about $250 and then at pick up asks for another $1250 in labor! (unreasonable to say the least) , and when your shocked, they look at you funny?

but where were we.... beautiful watch happy 28 yr anniversary

What a story and a watch, the story reminds me of the San Miguel advert for those who don't know which one ......... http://youtu.be/ZIqgZPHEnnI
