Inherited Rolex

Hi, I'm new here and looking for some advice about my Dad's watch. We found it when Mum died 18 months ago and I'm not sure how to find out whether it's genuine or not and whether, due to the condition, it's worth doing anything with it.

I've not no papers or box and all I really know is it's pretty old as it was my Grandad's prior to Dad owning it. The glass is cracked and the bracelet/strap is missing (I'm not selling this am I?!). It does appear to be working however it's not been worn for over 20 years so I'm not sure how accurate it is.

The model number appears to be 6098 and on the crown is Super Oyster Rolex. We've looked online and found various possibilities but none appear to be exactly the same as this watch has numbers for the seconds, 5 at 1 o'clock, 10 at 2 o'clock etc.

Thanks in advance for any advice. I'm

If you searched 'Rolex 6098' you know exactly as much as I do. Basic info is plentiful but the watch is one of those heartbreakers in that if grandpa had just bought it with a black honeycomb star dial it would be worth 10s of thousands more than your example.

This one was auctioned by Christie's with an estimate of 110,000-180,000 US

I don't know if your dial is original which makes a lot of difference but watches like yours seem to run 7500-10000. There are some great vintage dealers in England maybe they will check in with better info.

Richard, isn’t the black star dial an unusual variant of the model ? I always thought it was made in very small quantities compared to the other dials

Yes but grandpa could have had it. :) I've not heard the honeycombs cost any extra at retail. Maybe it was only available on the 18k 6098. Interesting, maybe Oskar will see this.

6098 is a great watch. I bought mine on eBay years ago with a repainted dial that I subsequently had repainted. It's currently away for service or I'd share the photo. In the US, I recommend Mr. Taylor in Texas for service. He posts on this forum.
