Introduction/Opinion
Hello to all on TRF,
Long time lurker from Melbourne, Australia and first time poster. I have literally just now created a profile. It's great to e-meet you all. Before I begin, I would like to say thank you to all who have contributed to the forums discussions (both past and present) - you have gone a long way in teaching me a thing or two around timepieces and their beauty. Apologies in advance if this isn't the right place in the forum to post this intro/discussion - please do advise if it isn't so that I am mindful going forward. My current 3 watch collection consists of the following: - 126660 Rolex DSSD - 210.32.42.20.04.001 Omega Seamaster 300M - IW377714 IWC Pilot Chronograph "Le Petit Prince Edition" I am looking at adding another timepiece to the collection. Reason? Expecting our first little baby girl on October 14th, so I thought that I would treat myself to a nice push present also. If you're wondering, yes my wife did get hers - and no it wasn't a watch . The watches which I am eyeing off are: - Omega Speedmaster sapphire sandwich - 210.30.42.20.01.002 Omega Seamaster "Nekton Edition" - 126622 Rolex Yachtmaster 40 (in either blue/rhodium dial) - 126622 Rolex DSSD D-Blue You are probably wondering that there is a fair bit of variety in what I am asking above, and I completely agree so let me try and best explain myself here. I am 6'2 and live in Melbourne, Australia. As some of you are aware, it's a complete nightmare to try get hold of a SS professional Rolex down here - it's in fact a nightmare worldwide (for some of us). I was fortunate enough to stumble across my 126660 at the AD in Abu Dhabi airport in 2018. So, I have no purchase history down here in Melbourne. I am after a "daily" which I can wear to work. I am in the IT space and want something which can fly under the radar - especially since some of the high-end managers are rocking Apple watches. So in my mind, I am trying to play chess and play it smart and not "stand out too much". Based on the above, I feel that if I purchased the Omega Speedmaster sapphire sandwich, this would suit. If i purchased the Rolex 126622 (called up and wait time is approx 6 months), I would probably turn to the IW377714 as a daily at work. However, at $16,700AUD for the 126622, I am not entirely sure on the 40mm size (which I know a lot on TRF would disagree). I have tried on a 40mm previously and felt to my eyes that it looked quite small ... The reason I have mentioned the 210.30.42.20.01.002 Omega Seamaster "Nekton Edition" is because it somewhat resembles the Rolex 126622 look and feel, yet at half the cost and sitting a little larger at 42mm. I still keep in touch with the sales rep in Rolex Abu Dhabi, and he has specified that he could source a 126660 DSSD D-Blue for me (once the borders open up). Who knows how long until this happens, but I am questioning whether I "need" another DSSD given I have the black dial already? We don't "need" any watches, but if I go down this route I would also turn to wearing the IW377714 as a daily at work. Then I'm thinking, for the price of the Rolex's in question above, I could purchase the Speedmaster AND Seamaster "Nekton Edition" and have quite a diverse collection (consisting of 3 divers). I then think to myself if I spend $9,000 AUD on one of the Omega's, I could use the other circa $9,000 AUD and take the family on a holiday? This one is more directed to you folks who have kids . Either way, apologies for the rant. It's quite a bit to stomach and I appreciate your replies. Cheers all. |

Welcome
Frankly, I would take door no. 3 (watch + hol) - although when any of us are going to be able to travel again is unclear...

Welcome to the forum
Hard to say which way I’d go watch wise, but I’d definitely keep the plans to take the family on vacation when it’s safe to travel |

Welcome OP!
If it was me I’d gravitate towards something that would not be incredibly large on her future wrist. I’d want her to keep it, wear it and enjoy it like I did when I give it to her. I am of the idea of wearing it occasionally and then passing it on to said birth child. So if I was in your position I’d probably be getting on a list for a new OP with a coral or turquoise dial. No suggestions, congrats on the double incoming! Pics when she’s here, with watch on wrist.

Welcome to the forums! Having owned a YM40, I would say that these fly under the radar pretty well and have a great versatility to them. The Omegas are a great option and you do have extra funds to treat the family to a holiday if you go that route.
I would always say get what you want and what you like. If this is going to be for you to wear to mark the occasion and you think that a 40mm is too small for you - I would look to get something larger for your wrist. If this is going to be for her when she grows up, a 40mm may be the option so she can wear it in the future. Either way, I think all of these are great options. Let us know what you pick and congratulations on the baby! |

Thanks all for your prompt replies. The beauty about these forums is evident with each and everyone of your replies - truly professional.
I am in no rush and will ensure that I sleep on it - no matter how long it takes, I will make sure that I make the right decision. I will definitely send through wrist shots of the watch and little one. |

Welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing your story.
We feel badly for you Aussies as it seems your country is a "particularly difficult" one in which to obtain a Rolex. Seems things are out of kilter there in that regard. Hopefully that will improve. BTW I enjoyed reading your so-called "rant." Nice when new members share information. You do already have some nice watches.
