Alternatives?
Just received the final career promotion in my field and want to celebrate with a piece I'll wear till the day I die. Given the lack of rolex supply, does anybody have recommendations for another brand? I currently own a datejust, gmtc, longines and tag, so open to any suggestions

First - congratulations on the promotion.
My advice - celebrate with whatever watch you've always wanted but never acquired. If that happens to be a Rolex or another brand...where there's a will there's a way. |

I’d look at a Rolex Cellini for a dress piece, or maybe a Grand Seiko or Panerai for a sports watch.

Patek Calatrava, Lange 1, AP Royal Oak, Rolex Day-Date 36 , JLC Reverso, F.P.Journe Chronometre Souverain, Vacheron Constantin Overseas or Patrimony.

Patek Calatrava. Takuya is a great guy! No SS Rolex is worth $20k. Dont go grey!

You could get a fine 118238 Day-Date for your budget....classic 36mm Day-Date, once you try that President bracelet, and feel the PM on your wrist, you'll never want to take it off....

For a 20k budget AP is the way to go. I would suggest a 39mm stainless RO like a 15300 or 15400. You can pick those up used for around 17-18k on websites like crown and caliber. If 39 mm is too large, there is the 37mm 15450st or the 36mm watches. With the 36mm watches, they wear like a regular 39mm and you can get some stunning complications like the dual time and annual calendar. PM me and I can give you some links to look at

Sounds like an occasion for a DD40. Trade the datejust to cover the difference and buy new
Otherwise AP royal oak chronograph, Lange 1815, Patek 5196.

Do you have a dress watch? If not, I'd recommend something by Lange, Vacheron, or Patek.

Congratulations! If I were celebrating such an occasion, it would probably be a Day-Date or a PP Calatrava. There are variations of each, but those are the collections I probably would choose from.

A Rolex. Which one depends on your tastes and desire. I would look at a YG Submariner, either last generation which should use your 20k or put a watch with the 20k and get a new one.

Breguet tradition or retro seconds would be my choice.

Thanks all for the wonderful feedback. I travel in a couple of weeks to a large city with ADs for these brands, so I'll try them on before committing. I tried on a few VCs a couple of years back and was not wholly impressed, so think it would be best to try the aforementioned pieces before committing. I'll keep you posted on the final decision

The options are too numerous to get into, wait till you go to the city and try on a bunch to see what sings,
I'm in the minority, but I've tried on 15400 and 5711 and thought "too glittery" and "meh" respectively....there's a lot of great watches from Breguet, Blancpain, JLC, IWC, OG, GS plus you're in graspingh ranch of some Langes....watch some of watchbox's reviews on Youtube, Although he "likes" everything, Tim gives a pretty good run down on features and movements etc...

I would also suggest you look at getting something preowned. If you dont plan to ever sell it, going for a piece without box and papers could save you a pretty penny. I would check sites like Govberg, tourneau, crownandcaliber, hqmilton, london jewelers, watchfinder and the forum classifieds.

Would definitely check out the AP Royal Oak line or even the VC Overseas for something different.. if dress, then Lange saxonia line or 1815 for sure
