I am deciding between these 2 watches. Both of them are in the $10k range. Your input is appreciated.

The first watch is a Panerai PAM 140 and the second is a Patek Phillipe 3802 Calatrava. Also, if you have any suggestions on these watches, please send them my way.

Normally, I think Patek would be everyones choice. But that particular Panerai vs that particular Patek......I think the Panerai wins!!!!

Not convinced. I personally think that Patek looks very 1980's. It's not a 'classic' in my mind. Not that the gold Pam will necessarily stand the test of time either but I think the Pam looks very 'now' where the Patek looks dated already.

They're such different watches it depends where you're going to be wearing them and this is such a subjective area especially with two very different timepieces.

I love my two-tone Datejust but my wife thinks I should be sporting a velvet coat and hanging around street corners. What do I know?

I'm a bit biased here as i had the 140, and have to say that side by side it has to be the PAM. The patek is nice, but as said above, this is an older style calatrava, and i much prefer the newer style.

Also, if you can get a 140 for $10000 then grab it with both hands, if it's fully boxed and in good condition then that's about $4000 below the normal asking price!

What you have there, imho, is a somewhat ordinary Patek, but an exceptional Pannie.

While I'd rather have a 'Patek', given these two choices, I'd take the Pannie.

I say Patek as a Panerai comes and goes but the Calatrava is a classic.

I must say that I appreciate Pateks they just do not do it for me. IMHO they remind me of my grandfaters watches. They just seem small dainty and fragile. I have tried to bring myself to buy one but always bought something else. I like the PAM but prefer the rads for suits the luminors are a bit bulky. Its just my opinion.

Is this going to be your only watch? IMO, those are two entirely different timepieces. Patek is an amazing watch but that particuar model isn't nearly as versatile as the Panerai. The Panerai can be dressed up or down whereas that Patek would look ridiculous with jeans and a t-shirt.

Needless to say, the PAM gets my vote here

I have both a Patek and a PAM in my collection and they are both different watches and serve different purpose in my life...
the Patek you are entertaining is one of the older style...even Patek started to UP size a bit...their men's dress watches are in the 35mm+ size...
A Patek is timeless but I would think you would enjoy a 35mm+ one more...PAM gets my vote in this one..a gold PAM is pretty special...
