Thanks! I'm fond of the dial details and butterfly rotor 1530 which is very stable and runs at COSC precision!

Cheers,
Rick

Though I just acquired a modern Air-King, I humbly join the club.
After reading and browsing this thread, I might be in the hunt for another one.
Cheers!

Looks excellent. Congrats!

If you are looking for another Air-King, do you think you’ll go for a older 34mm to join your new version?

Thank you.
I’m definitely going for a 34 mm preferably with a white dial.

old AirKing 5520

Hello guys,

I have this one, early 70's.

Took it to my AD and the service clerk thought it was a fake Rolex watch, he had never seen one of these before

Thats 14k, baby
yes, yes, its gold shell.
Still shines from a mile away

Just doesn't get much wrist time as of late.

Hello, I am new to the Rolex forum.
When clearing out my mother's effects we found this Rolex Air King. Can't see any box or paperwork. It belonged to my father, who died in 2000. I went to a local specialist watch dealer and he said it had been repaired or enhanced (still a smidge of luminous paint where the Rolex name is) and offered to buy it from me for £250 (I am in the UK). I politely declined.
Apparently, from the serial number, it was a 1958 watch; I assume it's a 5500. I have looked all through this forum and elsewhere and haven't been able to find anything the same. It has the herringbone background which I haven't seen elsewhere. If I have seen one with the herringbones it had different hands.
Maybe my father had it customised? I do know that he would have taken it to an authorised Rolex repair place if he did have any work done, as he was very particular about that sort of thing.
It had been in my mother's bedside cabinet for the best part of 20 years; when I took it out and moved it it started working again.
I won't sell it as it was my dad's. I am female and have 4 brothers so one of us will own it. I would be interested to know if anyone could give me any more information.

Beautiful find. Not only tad a Rolex but something that belonged to your father all these years after he passed. That’s probably why your mom kept it so close all those years.

Over the years, people have been leaning toward larger dialed watches and that 34mm dial is probably the perfect size for a woman so it might be perfectly suited for you (without knowing any details) and a nice way to keep a piece of your dad close.

I will say the Arabic numerals do look like they’re more from the late 60’s as opposed to the 50’s. Someone else might have better luck narrowing down the era of those numerals, indexes, and dial style but regardless... great find on multiple levels.

Best of luck and please keep us updated with any new info you discover.

Well it's got a T-SWISS-T dial which means it's Tritium which came about in the '60s. Here's a link that might help you date it.

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=123465

Also if you remove the strap there should be a serial number on one end and the model number on the other. The serial number will help you better date the watch.

You might get some good information posting questions in the Vintage Section.

Thanks. I think it is just the right size for me actually, maybe with a different strap/bracelet.
The dealer who looked at it checked the serial number and said 1958 was year of manufacture. I'll have to have another look to get exact details.

Thank you both. I'll try posting on the Vintage forum.
Serial number starts 374 which does seem to indicate 1958.
