I really like my 116900Air King. It’s my first Rolex. The dial is unique. I like that Rolex is in green with the yellow coronet and green seconds hand. It also fits my wrist perfectly. It got me started with collecting Rolex watches.

I picked up an air king the other day after seeing it for the first time at an AD. The green blew me away and made me pull the trigger.

I picked up my new air king the other day from an AD and I love it. It’s clean sleek and the unusual colors make it a fun novelty.

I love the controversy and sometimes the hate does make me smile. Its fun and quirky and has a slash of color. It feels youthful.

I dont care if it goes up or down in the future, i doubt the fluctuation will be enough to change my life in either direction. I have been wearing it daily for about 4 months now.

I may be in the minority, but I actually prefer the new Air Kings. I appreciate that Rolex at least tried to do something unique with by printing the Rolex in green on the dial. The older Air Kings to me are just cheaper datejust's.

So IYHO "No Date" watches are useless due the existence of the Datejust?
Next in line is that the DJ is useless because of the DD
Each his own I would say.... (BTW I love DateJust watches)

I personally do not like watches with a date. Plus, to me, the cyclops is ugly. Explorer and OP39 all day.

I guess that is why Rolex makes all these different but similar watches. We can all find one or two we like.

Maybe if the Bloodhound SSC (supersonic car) ever were to go supersonic on land, this might be a more popular watch, as the dial pattern is mash-up of instrumentation in the cockpit. I believe it the watch model was meant as a commemoration, but the company who made the car went into receivership, and it never reached fruition. Remains to be seen if the project is re-launched.

https://www.rolexmagazine.com/2014/0...and-rolex.html (Details on instrumentation for Bloodhound, custom made by Rolex, at end of article).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloodhound_SSC (History and status of project).

To take your logic a bit further, watches are useless due to cell phones.

AK and Exp retain value. DJ depreciate considerably relative to almost all other Rolex models.

Watches have a romantic and historic appeal that outweighs usefulness. DJ just don’t have that appeal to me, despite their insane popularity and attractive looks.

i think popular/unpopular is depending on who you ask. some only appreciate models that are "Hot" currently. again, if you see history, daytona wasnt popular in the beginning of the launch. and now people go crazy all over. just saying. follow your heart

Why Air King is such an unpopular reference?

This I totally agree with! I know a couple of people who walk into ADs asking for Subs not even initially wanting one to begin with JUST BECAUSE everyone wants them.
Couple months ago, I got my ultimate grail TO ME, because that’s the watch I grew up loving. I could have easily grabbed a sub but it’s not what my heart wanted. I could care less what’s hot.
I personally love the style of the AK and so many people hating it actually helped me in acquiring it . I’m sure if it’s discontinued people will flock to grab one and that’s sad for people who actually really want it .
