What "TESTS" do you carry out on a new Rolex?

In order of priority.....

1. Accuracy test: Make sure my Rolex is within just ONE second deviation - plus or minus.

2. Bracelet test: Bracelet comfort, clasp centralization and overall fit. Don't ever have a problem as watch comes straight out of box and smack on the wrist - no adjustments whatsoever!!

3. Power Reserve test: Give the watch around 45 turns of the crown, note date and time, and then observe two days later to see how much PR that main-spring can pack.

4. Position test: Check watch accuracy, i.e. either gain or loss in different positions at night (I'm talking about the watch, ya tossers!!) - i.e. crown up, crown down, dial up, dial down.

That's about it!! With all of the above FOUR tests having passed with flying colours, don't need any more.

Cheers - JJ

I mostly check the accuracy and the bracelet.

Also, I do the "grime test": Does the watch need a good wash?

Why would you want to wash a brand new watch, ya tosser?

Okay JJ,
You asked for it. You go through Rolex watches like razor blades. If you really do the test above answer me this: On your new Rolex watches, how much of a difference to you find in rate results based on the resting position of the watch at night?

Crown UP usually gains.....crown DOWN usually results in a loss.

Have you ever seen Bo's wrists?

I had my SD pressure tested a few weeks ago for my upcoming scuba trip to Belize.

Can't remember as my watch was bought 21 years ago now. I did check for accuracy when it came back from the RSC last year. That was it.

Well, first I place the watch on the sofa opposite myself, still with plastics on, Make a coffee, normally they don't want a drink at this stage. Start to get into some small talk, just to get them all relaxed and reassured, by the end of the night all plastics are off and its straight on with it.

I keep an eye on the accuracy for a while and then I tend to forget about it.
This is the only check that I make.

The test whether wifey notices it LOL!

Seriously though - I've bought all my Rollies second hand so it goes to RSC first. That's the first test for me.

Okay, probably a dumb question that's been asked and answered several times on this board...but to wind a Rolex do you wind it clockwise, counter-clockwise, or back and forth? What is a full "winding" motion--having the crown itself do a 360 degrees, or having the hands on the face move around a certain amount of distance (e.g. a full 12-hour rotation, etc.).

Once the crown is unscrewed and not pulled out it is the only direction in which it will turn. Try turning it counter clockwise and you will just hear a clicking sound. If the watch crown is facing you turn it clockwise. A full wind would depend on the particular watch's power reserve but in the case of an Automatic just a few turns should do as a kick start if you wish, it will be would well on the wrist. Based on what you asked a full winding motion would basically be a full rotation of the crown (The hands do not have to move unless you need to adjust the time or date). Once you do so and go to put the crown back in (with a screw down crown of course) you will get a few turns in before it is all the way on. For storage you could consider a watch winder, mainly good for if you have more than one Automatic watch you alternate with.

The only test I did was did it meet my expectations in person versus the preceding reputation. It passed.
