How can you tell??

Hello:

From reading some of the threads, I read about how some TRF can spot Rolex wearers while out with the general public. I have tried this, with little to no success. I find myself tilting my head on all sorts of weird angles trying to figure out what kind of watch a certain person might be wearing. I have not been "caught" doing this, but when I am (as I suspect I a doomed to be) I suspect it will get interesting.

So, I am curious to know, what kind of tricks or what features you look for when trying to determine what kind of watch a person is wearing. I know I look for the cyclops. Certainly not 100% accurate, but it is a start. Any other hints???

I can't say honestly, I can just tell, maybe it is the thickness of the watch, but you just know

I always look at the bracelet structure and the clasp if i can't see the crystal of the watch and sometimes i try to look at the bezel rolex watches have a distinctive bezel structure

When you have seen a LOT of Rolex watches, you learn to recognize them instantly from a mile's distance.

I usually just grab them by the wrist, stranger or not and closely check their watch! Usually ends up in jail as well!

The more pics you see the more you train your eyes to spot Rolex or any other brand. That's how I did and it worked for me.

It is not as easy as you think, but when you know what to look for it does help.
The bracelet is always a good sign as is the cyclops.
Remember 88 out of 100 will not be a Rollie.
Enjoy the spotting.

That about sum's it up.
My wife usually just rolls her eyes when I say something like.
"Oh they are wearing a Rolex such n such"
It comes with years of practice.

I look at the bracelet and whether its an oyster or a jubilee. I then proceed to get a glimpse of a cyclops etc.

I just take a weighted sock, usually with a couple rolls of quarters or a bar of soap and *THWACK*

Lean over their unconcious body and read the dial.....How else would you do it?

Looks like it is going to be a matter of time before my eye is properly trained. Maybe in the meanwhile I will just carry a set of binoculars with me.

Anybody know if there are any laws pertaining peeping WIS's? ;)

Outside of my smart-alec response, I have just studied the Brand. I have looked at photos and spent HOURS at my AD talking watches. It grows on you. Obsorb like a sponge while you are here, it's worth it. I also never hesitate to say, "nice watch." Whatever the brand they are wearing, they usually say "thanks."

I don't see any real details in the responses here, and I often wonder if some of you guys are sometimes thinking a person's watch is a fake when actually it's real. But anyway, a good way you can tell if a Rolex is genuine just by looking at it on a person's wrist is the way the lugs meet with the solid end links. On a genuine Rolex the lugs should extend past the SEL's. On all the fakes I've seen so far(I've seen alot, even owned a few) the lugs always line up even with the SEL's. But on all the genuine Rolex's I've seen(and owned) the lugs always extend past the SEL's.. So I believe this is a very good way to determine if it's a genuine Rolex or not. I'm not saying this is 100% accurate, but look at all the Rolex's you see from now on and see if you can tell what I'm talking about.

*The exception to this would be the Yachtmaster and Day-Date, which have shorter lugs for some reason.

Maybe it's because it's the official watch of the soccer moms where I live, but I can spot that TT, gold fluted bezel Lady DJ from miles away. I can even tell if it's that Seiko that looks a lot like that Lady DJ but isn't. And I am so happy my wife picked out a Lady DJ with the SS jubilee bracelet and whitegold bezel/silver face just cause it's different. It was my pre-Rolex addict days, so I was very lucky :)

The bracelet always makes me want to glance closer. And I'm amazed at how many watch makers copy the Oyster bracelet.

My best spot - Southwest NOLA to Vegas at the tail end of Jazzfest: 9 Subs, at least a dozen DJs, the one and only Exp II I've seen in the wild (black dial) and a older gent (kinda looked like a fat Scorsese) with a sweet Panerai and his wife (to his credit close to his age) in a gold Daytona.
