2016 Datejust: how to adjust the date for am/pm

Hello so i just got a new DJ for a gift. I wasn't at the store to ask how to adjust the date/time and specifically for AM/PM.

For example lets say my hour/minute hands its set for 8:00 AM. I haven't worn the watch for a 5 days and i need to set the watch. The actual time is 10:00AM (5 days later).
I know i can move the watch to the 2nd position (after the winding position) and that can move the date to the actual date, 5 days later. How do i know if this the hour/minute hand is set to AM or PM?

I hate guessing and then having the date change at noon and throwing me off for the rest of the day. And on top of that, having to wind it past 30 days to reset it.

Typically what I do is:

Wind the watch, fully.
Set the date to one day before the actually date.
Set the time by going around until the date clicks to the correct date, then set the current time.

good info, i'll try that. I didn't know that the date still changes by manually winding the watch around ? i assume it does, by your post?

Also, is there some type of "default" AM or PM that rolex sets it to mechanically when we change the date?

Yea, the date changes when you move the hands by the crown.

I'm not understanding what you mean, sorry. Fairly certain the answer is no though. The only way to know if it's am or pm is to notice when the date changes while setting the time by the crown.

The date changes at midnight. Obviously, you're in AM when the date changes.

I just set my date to the day before and then manually spin the hour hand round until the date clicks over to the correct day then I know whether it's in AM or PM.

sounds like setting it to the date before is the consensus. i just did that and winded the hours until it changed the date manually and set the time.

i thought that setting the date would default the time to AM initially.

No, it never defaults, it changes the date every 24 hours, like clockwork.

When you initially set the watch, set the time first, not the date. Turn the hands past 12. If the date changes you are already "am" (midnight) and go directly to the time of day. If the date does not change it is noon - go back or forward to the correct time.

Lastly, use the quick-set to the correct date.

I am not sure this is needed for modern watches but older watches should not have the date changed within a couple hours before and after 12PM. It is recommended to set the date when watch is at 6:30AM.

- wind watch
- adjust time forward until date changes and continue to 6:30
- set date
- set time

If you have a full set, read the instruction manual.

Me too, though it's not a huge inconvenience.

Set it to the day before, change the time until the date wheel turns. If it's PM, make one more revolution.

C'mon, man.
