Raymond Weil vs Rolex

My son who is a guitar nut wants the Raymond Weil Les Paul Freelancer limited edition watch. I was thinking about buying it for him for graduation but I just can't see spending almost $5000 for a Raymond Weil watch (I am a Rolex guy) Do these limited edition ones hold there value any better ? Does Rolex have any 'guitar' honorary watches?

Nothing against Raymond Weil, as they do make some aesthetically nice pieces. That said, my guess is on a future flip...it will not even hold 50% value. I'd say you would likely get 30% on a good day if you were lucky!

No resale there. Doesn't mean he shouldn't get one if that's what the heart wants though.

It's good that he wants a mechanical... This is an excellent opportunity to educate him on the relative merits of each brand. Give him a couple of the Watch Snob columns to read... He will ask for a Rolex OP instead as a graduation gift. Congrats on the ocassion!

if thats what he is leaning toward there is nothing wrong with that. If its his first its probably a keeper anyway so resale might not be of any concern. Weirdly enough, Raymond Weil was also my "first" watch. Its a good starting point IMHO as you don't want the collection to peak too early.

Get the RW for 70% off from a gray market

$5k for any RW is criminal

Get a Rolex, and throw in a band t-shirt. I don't see why a watch needs to pronounce your love of guitars.

Watch looks like an omega speedmaster. I'd get him that instead.

Let us be frank, RW are garbage and do not spend Rolex money on one. You will both regret it.

Rolex 100%. 20 years from now when he looks back on his graduation gift, he might no longer love the Les Paul on the dial of his watch as he thinks he does now.

Omega Speedmaster, Rolex Sub or Rolex Datejust are more memorable and enduring than a Raymond Weil.

How about just buying him a nice Les Paul guitar? That'll hold it's resale value, unlike the RW Les Paul watch.

I had a Raymond Weild with Chronograph. It was carrying some Daytona influence, I forgot its model name but similar models are still in production. When I met a few watch guys they asked why I bought that less known brand. I liked that watch but sold it later along with others to buy something.
It doesn't matter limited production or not. Brand name is the most crucial point if you take resale value into consideration. When honeymoon ends with the watch, he may feel penitent but Rolex is different and deliveres better value should he decide to sell it

It seems as though your son wants the RW which seems to be getting lost in the what watch is better, what has the best resale value, and where the watch fits in in the overall watch brand hierarchy statements. You can't force anyone to be as into this hobby as we all are but you can do your best to encourage it.

If the RW is what it takes to get him into watches then so be it. Its better that than he gets a "better" watch which is his second choice, and he misses the chance to get into watches as a lifetime hobby.

I would love for my sons to be as into watches as i am when they get older and i will do whatever i can to get them interested even if that means indulging watch purchases that wouldn't be the ones I would choose myself. Watches are such a personal thing and the only one who's opinion matters as to what constitutes a great watch is the one who is wearing it.

Maybe he'd warm up to Rolex knowing this guy and many other musicians wear them

My first nice watch was a RW. I was at Uni and paid full retail from a very intimidating store in Bond St. I sold it a few years later for 20% of its retail.
