Question: Why did Rolex and Doxa share the patent?…vs. one or the other filing for their own respective company?

As more of a true WIS and engineer, I love the history behind the technology developments that led the engineering of these iconic diver watches all the way from the 1970's, i.e. how they solved the issues with saturated diving and diver watches. These are my favourite iconic diver watches:

- Rolex Sea Dweller
- Doxa Sub300T Conquistador
- Omega Plopro
- Seiko Tuna 600m

If you read about them you will see how Seiko and Omega took different routes instead of the HEV.

First talking about the the HEV it was around 1969 when Doxa introduced the first divers watch equipped with a Helium Release Valve, that was available first to the general public. And its widely believed to have been co-developed by Doxa and Rolex at that time. Now Rolex submitted a prototype patent on 6th November 1967, its thought only around 50 of these double Red 1665s were distributed with patent pending case backs. And now worth a lot of money as these are REALLY rare and not like today's often quoted as rare modern day watches..Although Rolex fitted Submariners (model 5513 - non date) with prototypes of this escape valve, for the COMEX divers. They did not start to build the Helium Release Valve into their retail dive watches until the SD in 1971,two years after the Doxa. Now after a bit of negotiations with Doxa and both companies had a very good working relationship. So IMHO its widely believed they decided to share the H/Valve patent, just to get it into production and for sale to the public the new HEV Rolex SD.

Cracking read, thanks very much for that, but is it safe to wear a Rolex/Comex watch in the hot tub?

If the water does not harm you then it should be safe for SS.

Possible Gruen and the RWC were partners at one time.

When I first joined TRF, the front page usually have at least a few threads about movements and history. This is what we need to bring back to TRF, new collectors learn more about history and heritage. Stop all these nonsense about AD, grey, prices, and investment. Good read my friend and thank you
