Platona from 2013 and 2018

Which one is better dial: Used, lightly polished and overhauled Platona from 2013 or mint 2018? Price difference is about USD 4000. To my eyes they are same. But experts here may correct me if there is any difference technically or visually between the early years and later production? Thank you.

What was overhauled? The movement?

I understand that Polishing platinum doesn’t remove metal unlike polishing steel or gold.

But i dont own a platona. Only aspiring to have one.

I would get the newer one. Have you tried it on before? It is quite a hefty piece.

With how much you are paying either way or another I'd go with the newer one, just because it is newer.

No visual or technical differences that I am aware of. But once again I'd go for new since difference isn't large. Also polishing platinum is hard AFAIK and who was the polishing and servicing done? Was it RSC? If so, good. If some 3rd party, especially one without reputation, I'd definitely steer clear.

No difference technically. So it doesn't matter at all.

No difference technically or in the dials. It needed an overhaul? Or just “Checking” it? If polished lightly/properly....shouldn’t be an issue.
If finances aren’t an issue, although at this price point, it shouldn’t be, I’d definitely go for the newer one

With the hardness of the Platinum being the same as Stainless, there should be equal amounts of metal removed by polishing the two metal as the damage should be equal as well through wear. A newer one would likely currently demand more as that the way the market seems to be. It they look the same, and you are going to keep it for a while then the age will change on the newer one and the $4K will be worth saving.

Google "polishing platinum" and you'll understand why. It doesn't polish like other metals.

I would go with the newer model. Still under warranty and the 4k difference is not a lot on a platinum Daytona.

It's a grey market OP or a nice Tudor, fwiw.

For the price difference (4000 USD is about 7%) I would opt for the mint 2018

I go brand new from AD (ask for 20% off)...
Then bundle with DayC & Rootbeer at MSRP.

This would be ideal but I am not convinced these discounts are still being offered?

It definitely loses metal during polishing, but it is very very little compared to polishing other metals. It truly is a pain in the @ss to polish.

Thank you all for the responses. I can see more would want to get the newer one. 4K is not small but perhaps at this price point I would also willing to pay that for absolute peace of mind.

Regular overhaul every 5 years, sometimes it just means checking, oiling...

Platinum doesn’t lose a layer from Polishing, so no loss in weight. The metal moves around during polishing, which is why i prefer over gold in rings. It has a completely different property then gold or steel.

Do a google search.

Does any AD still offer any discounts for these? With 15-20% off the full pice for the Platona and a 500C at list price, not a bad deal I think.

Loss in weight is negligible, but you definitely lose trace amounts of metal which can be seen on the felt and cotton disks. I have refinished numerous platinum Rolexes, and work with platinum very frequently

The malleability makes it very hard to get the desired result, and the 5% of ruthenium that Rolex uses in the alloy makes it pretty darn hard as well.
