Okay, talk me into Tumi

Perhaps you Tumi lovers would love to convert me to the brand.

So my wife and I have some well-used Air Canada branded luggage and we seem to find ourselves traveling more frequently, so I'm considering an upgrade.

Specifically, we have a carry-on size luggage and a full-size luggage, both of them are very average in terms of build, looks, etc.

She's going away for 5 days and kind of wanted something in between what we have currently size-wise. I was considering perhaps a smaller, expandable carry-on might meet our needs?

A few questions:
-In what country are Tumi products manufactured? (a quick search online didn't readily produce this piece of information)
-Based on the above, what model or series would you recommend I take a look at?
-What sets Tumi apart and allows them to command as much money as they do? Are they that much better?

I'd like to stick to a soft case if possible, as opposed to those hard shell type cases - though you might be able to talk me into this as well.

Thanks and I look forward to your input.

Well! A discussion about Tumi Being the resident Tumi addict on TRF, let me see if I can help.

As to what country they are produced in, all I know is I believe Malaysia, but honestly I am not sure. Now... on to models...

I also prefer the soft line up, just my preference. There are several different lineups, from Alpha 3 up to (Carbon Fiber) CFX. Some are ballistic nylon and some available in leather. While Alpha 3 is a good basic lineup, something like the Arive’ is more extravagant looking. I use the Arive’ Gatwick as my carry-on and recommend it highly ($1,500). The top of the line is the CFX, Carbon Fiber and extremely nice looking. It is also extremely expensive ($2,000). If you don’t want to spend that much, I would really suggest checking out the Alpha 3 expandable carry-on. It is durable, nice looking and has a lot of features (not to mention half the cost).

Don’t forget to post pics!

Another TRF Tumi-addict in the works!

It’s a Swiss or Italian brand I believe. Really well put together from what I’ve sampled so far. I’ll likely be picking up some trolley pieces from an outlet store in the UK this summer. The rrp pricing does seem a little high when comparing to the competition.

Great luggage! I won my first carry on suitcase from Toyota. I always bought cheap luggage...figure who cares? It’s going to get beat up anyways. Wrong! The way the luggage is built is great quality. The way their luggage is designed is amazing. The pockets for things, straps, compartments are totally built for travel. I’ve added some pieces over the years. I can pack in my carry on suit case as much as I did in one of my older larger suitcases. I rarely check luggage anymore. It’s great stuff. The Tumi I have is Alpha 2 which has been replaced buy Alpha 3. I’ll never have to replace luggage ever again. It’s built to last near forever.

Tumi is now owned by Samsonite. Rumor is that quality isn’t what it once was, but I know the brand still has its fans.

I have a messenger bag from the pre-Samsonite days. It’s really nice. Excellent quality. And I’ve had it fixed twice by Tumi (broken clasps) at no cost to me/no questions asked.

Choose nylon soft as our resident addict said. Tumi is great stuff, though i went Swiss Army this time around and they work great. In the 80s to 90s did Hartman, then LV for a while. Tumi is great stuff.

Thailand is correct. Thanks Abdullah71601 for this information.

I was convinced I wanted to go and see the store. I had to practically drag my wife in kicking and screaming (I’m not paying that much for a piece of luggage!).

.... Well .... pictures to be posted later tonight.

When I was flying for the airlines, Briggs & Riley was the bag of choice for most of us. I personally prefer it over Tumi, regardless of price point.

Tumi is a great brand, but I personally prefer Briggs and Riley. Great quality and a lifetime warranty. My ex was a 25 year flight attendant and thats all she and most of the crews she flew with used. If it gets damaged, they will either repair it for free or send you a new one. Just my two cents.

Another vote for B and R, although TUMI seems really nice also. Most of my airline friends use B and R roller bag.

Samsonite bought TUMI about three years ago. The quality remains excellent, but the lifetime warranty is long gone.

ROAM luggage was started by some former Tumi execs.
Online ordering exclusively. I bought a couple pieces.
Haven’t used them yet but they look well made.

Had the same carry on SKU# with tags from both Thailand and Vietnam. Tumi design is understated while functional allowing biggest storage space within a dimension compared to other brands.

Expensive and overpriced? Yeah but I don’t do checked luggage on business trips even if it is 3 weeks long so its worth it to me.

I have several Tumi products because of the looks.
Quality and service is mediocre at best for the money.

Wallet torn after a year of use, Ducati line back pack zipper damaged and ballistic nylon bubbling, T3 special edition handle repeatedly broke, no service possible.
Full leather messenger bag has the belt attachments slowly tearing off, the weight of a macbook air is too much.

Would I buy Tumi products again ? yes, but recently ventured to the new line of Rimowa. Hard shell but really different league quality wise.

My wife had a Tumi Computer rolling bag for about 12 years and the wheels and handle were busted and they said they couldn't get parts for it, so she figured she'd just buy Samsonite and replace it sooner at a quarter of the cost.

I haven’t had anything in my life for 12 years.

Seems like a huge win to me.

Tumi still repaired my garment bags free of charge last year, under the lifetime warranty. That may be gone now on new purchases, but still seems to be in place for past purchases.

I've had nothing but positive experiences with their customer service.

I had an issue with a garment back about ~1.5 years after purchase. They took care of it no questions asked.

I had an issue with my Astor soft duffel bag about ~2 years after purchase. This one was probably my fault, but I took it in just to see what they could do about what I thought was excessive "wear n tear" given how well I cared for the item. They took care of it and returned it quickly good as new.

My alpha carry-on gets used a lot for airport travel and it's held up very well over the years.

One thing to keep an eye out for is their discount stuff...I am talking about Tumi luggage that ends up at places like Nordstrom Rack and their outlet stores. I've read online that the Tumi products you usually find at these stores are not the same quality/design as what's available on their website and traditional B&M stores and retailers. Would love to hear from some of the experts on here if there is any validity to this...

I love Tumi. I probably have 5 or so bags, briefcase, shoulder type bags and backpacks. I buy mine from the outlet when the line is technically going away. I don’t have to buy the newest stuff. I buy it for looks and they just hold up to the beatings I put them through with life on the road and in the air. My latest back pack was the blue camo line that is going away. Got 50% or so off retail.
