Looks more early '50s to me. With the radium ("Swiss Made") dial and dauphine hands.

Hi, Adam:
you might be right

the serial number reads 166796? and I'm not sure if it is 7 digits or just 6 digits.

166796x will make it 1967/68, else if 166796 then it is 1956/57.

your professional opinion welcomes

I vote for 1956 (SNs in the '50s were a bit of a jumble, as Rolex started again from zero in 1953), but you can also take it to your watchmaker to remove the case back -- a production year (and quarter, e.g. II 56) should be stamped on the inner case back. Assuming, that is, that it isn't a service replacement.

By the way, I'm a professional pathologist, not Rolex expert, by any means!
