Newb Intro and ? re an 1803 I'm considering
Hi all,
I've spent a lot of time the last 2 days reading on this site and learned many things--this is a great resource. I don't yet own a Rolex, although plan on getting one. My Dad, who recently passed away had an Explorer 1 he bought new in the early 60s. Unfortunately, I was unable to locate it after he died and I'm afraid it was taken as his Alzheimer's worsened. Someday, I'll have to purchase one of these. For now I'd like to tap the collective wisdom of the board re a 1967 YG DD I've been offered in trade for something. I have read about the cons of the non quickset movement and other aspects of this vintage. I know the market for these watches is soft, but relative to this one's condition I'd appreciate feedback as to it's approximate price. I've copied the email below w/ the description and will post the pics he emailed--these aren't the best photos and I'm asked for some in higher res. Finally, I love the look of the YG DD with the white/MOP dial with Roman numerals to tone down the gold. I know this wasn't offered c 1967, but would it be possible to fit such a dial to this vintage watch? I know the RSCs wouldn't do this work, but hoping someone else could if I could source a genuine dial. . . Cheers, Bill ____________________ Hello Bill: Thank you for the email and consideration. Here is the information on the Rolex and some pictures attached. Men's Gold Rolex President Day/Date Circa 1967 (Look the same as the new one today. They haven't changed the classic timeless style) Excellent condition-looks like new, very well kept and has the appearance it has been worn very little Acrylic crystal -no scratches Band is in excellent condition (it is not the original band, original bands were very soft and wore out quickly) I don't have the box that this watch came in but I can give you a nice Rolex box for one of my other Rolexes to go with it. I've owned the watch for 14 years and haven't worn it much. I had the watch serviced about 8 years ago by Rolex and may have been worn 6-8 times since then. It keeps perfect time. Let me know what you think. You won't be disappointed in the condition or operation of the watch. Thank you again. |

I second that. I'm considering getting an 1803 too, although I'm not sure it would look big enough on my wrist after wearing subs. Have you tried one on yet?

P.S. I'd leave the original dial. Classic look with all the same color. Not sure about options for MOP.

Hi everyone and thanks for the comments. Yes, it has an aftermarket "italian" band. Seller said it was good but I am put off by the phony crown logo. Wish it were original. Nonetheless does a price of around 6000 USD sound in line with the market? Thanks so much!

Thanks. I am guessing that this should be priced as a head only plus maybe scrap value for the bracelet? I am tempted to hold out for a clean original or an Explorer 1...
Again thanks for the input. Cheers |

I think $6000 is way too much if that is an aftermarket bracelet, you can get a nice Explorer I for around half of that.

You would be well to consider wearing one on a croco strap rather than an aftermarket bracelet (or stretched original). You should be able to find a nice one for $3500-4000, depending on condition, etc. Here or on the vintagerolexforum they come up rather often. Steve Mulholland would be a good guy to contact first (he has posted here and on VRF).
