5711 vs 5131

A good friend is asking me to choose between 5131 and 5711. His AD offers one of these two models after he spend tones of money on jewellery to his wife.

Here are some questions he asked and I want your opinion:

- he will wear either of them as a daily watch
- he has no intention to flip
- he is not a watch guy. He owns couple Datejust
- I know him long enough he will abuse any watch he wears. He treats watch as a tool.
- he already said he will not sell me either of these watches :0)

Given all the info my immediate response is still 5131 because it's a collectors item. He can continue to wear his datejust. What do you think? This is a good dilemma to me if it ever happened

I have a good relationship with my AD and got the 5711r and en route to get a 5711 blue (was offered a 5167 again the other day on bracelet). The 5131 however is on a whole different level/playing field. If this is indeed true, go for the 5131. However, get a sub or datejust since I'm not sure you really want to wear it every day.

I have a 5130r Worldtime (which is the same case and movement), its really cool and great for travelling if you're in a shirt or long sleeve. I would wear the WT to work or on a plane but under the protection of a dress cuff or sports coat. Would hesitate to bring it near water or any sporting type events. It's also not a true every day wearer due to the lack of lume.

AFAIK AD's can't even offer them though, right? Thats a Patek decision. Obviously the AD has a role to play in lobbying for the customer but its not their decision at the end of the day.

What I am told is you need to be "recommended" by the AD to even be considered. I don't think it just arrives and you get one lol.

UK for sure but certainly not everywhere. Even UK salon is different to UK AD’s.

I think the AD will find out from the distributor that they’re in line to get one. At that point they’re asked to submit the client’s info to Patek. Mine had the papers with my info on them when it arrived at the AD. My guess is the distributor/Geneva will not approve unless you’re known to Patek.

With that said, sometimes deals fall through and it is probably dependent on the regional distributor.

IMO a 5711/1P vs a 5131 is more of a fair comparison. The SS 5711/1A is a hyped up watch, like the SS Daytona.

If your friend wants a 5711/1A, he can easily buy one on the secondary market, rather than spending "tons of money on jewelry".

5131P retails for almost 4.5x as much as a 5711/1A. I would take the 5131P as it is a work of art and the bracelet is amazing

Things are different in Asia, some ADs do offer 5131s to customers who spend a fortune on other watches and/or jewellery. I know 2 people who obtained their 5131s through an AD in that way.

Sounds like the jewelry spend is preexisting and this is simply the dealer trying to treat a good customer well.

Not based on the OP. Way too beautiful to beat up as a daily “tool” watch. Shame to do that with a 5711, tragedy to do it with a 5131.
