How many different Rolexes are there?

I have been asked by a fellow watch enthusiast to confirm how many different watches do Rolex make. Not just the different models but the variations within the models ie. Dial colour, bezel type, case size etc.
I started counting the various options for each model on their website but was then told that they don't put all their variations on there.
Does anybody know the answer?

Haha, yeah, lots.

Related to OP's question: am I right in thinking that the Air-King is the only reference where there are no options (you know, dial colour options, bezel options, etc)?

Forget about it! Simply too many variations/combo. Not worth the effort to just get a number that will be quite meaningless, plus the high chance of the number changing very often.

There’s too many!

With the new Tudor website, they list the total variations available with their current offerings.

Maybe Rolex will do the same but I am not sure how useful this information is

The Explorer I as well...And by that logic I would probably also count the Submariner.

Reminds me of the Datejust wearer who doesn't know anything other than it's a Rolex.

Semantics: The Submariner (Not Submariner Date) comes only in stainless and without the date window.

As for the Explorer, What similarities does it share with the Explorer II other than part of its name? If you tell your AD that you want an Explorer, he’s not gonna ask if you want the polar or black dial, Jubilee or Oyster, SS / TT / or PM...

Semantics.

If you ask your AD if you want an Air-King... They're going to ask.... Wait... Yeah, you want an Air-King.

Semantics... It's great... Because, language can be as precise as you want it to be. Or not as the case may be.

So Air-King... Only named model with no options. Glad we got that sorted.

The Explorer and Explorer II are two different named models, Captain Obvious... The Explorer II has options... The Explorer does not... I’m WICKED excited that we got that sorted!!!

Good point, I think that's the case since they introduced a steel and gold Sea Dweller. I don't think we can include the Explorer as there is an Explorer II.

I'd argue that the Explorer I and II are two completely different watches. Look back at your question. Is the Explorer II Polar simply a different dial color option for the Explorer I? Movement, size, style, functionality. They have about as much in common as the Yachtmaster I and II, which you might also view as different options of the same watch.

With the Sub it gets a little trickier as they all share the same case and overall design, but applying a similar logic the Submariner and Submariner Date are not interchangeable.

That said, I see where you're coming from, especially when looking to other brands. There are sooo many Speedmasters when you consider limited editions, range of complications, etc. that it is too much of an undertaking to distinguish between each version individually (for me at least.)

I guess to me Rolex is kind of unique in that way.
