PAM 587 - "The" 1940 is here!!!

Thanks to PuristSPro's Amanico who broke the stunning news...

...no words necessary!!!

Thank you OP, now all I have to do is to try to be one of the first 1000 to get it, before the flippers do!!!

Wow! This one came from out of no where. Very surprising.

So much for all that speculation about "MM" dials no longer being possible?

...yes, so much for that. I'll be the first to admit that my face was flush when I first saw it because that was one of the [less important] reasons why I selected the 217.

However, seeing as it's also a LE and in a 1940 case (and I really like the 1940 case and the accompanying crown ) I'm willing to look the other way... as long as I get one at retail (and not flipper) pricing!!!

Speaking of which, the nice guys at pdotcom (namely Greg Esq.) already dug up the OFFICIAL news here:

https://www.paneraiwandw.com/index.php/en

Also check this out:

http://www.panerai.com/en/special-ed...ciaio-pam00587

RADIOMIR 1940 MARINA MILITARE 3 DAYS ACCIAIO – 47mm

The new Radiomir 1940 Marina Militare 3 Days Acciaio presents the pure design of this case, combined with a series of historic details demonstrating the fidelity of the new model to those created for the Italian Navy in the 1940s.

The case is 47 mm in diameter, the standard size for watches made for the commandos of the Navy, because they had to be worn over a wet suit. It is made of AISI 316L stainless steel, an alloy particularly resistant to corrosion that is perfect for a watch water-resistant to ten bar (around 100 meters). Engraved between the lugs, milled from the steel block of the case, are the reference of the watch (PAM00587) and the number of the case, while the inscription “Marina Militare” appears on the dial. Apart from the engraving, the design of the black dial is of absolute simplicity with only the large linear markers and the Arabic figures at the cardinal points. All the elements on the dial are perfectly visible in very poor light, thanks to the large size and the typical Panerai structure of the dial, consisting of superimposed discs with Super-LumiNova® between the, visible through the holes corresponding to the hour markers. To protect the dial, the crystal is not made of sapphire crystal but slightly cambered Plexiglas®, as in the period examples in which the crystal was made of polymethyl acrylate. The hands too, slender and pointed, have been designed to match those of the period Panerai watches.

Visible through the sapphire crystal back of the case is the in-house P.3000 calibre, a hand-wound mechanical movement with a power reserve of three days achieved with two spring barrels. Clearly visible through the crystal back are the oscillation of the balance wheel and the wide bridges, satin finished with blue engraving, which cover much of the wheelwork. The mechanism for adjusting the time with the winding crown is extremely practical because it enables the hour hand to be adjusted independently of the other hand, in jumps of one hour at a time so as not to interfere with the running of the minute hand.

The Radiomir 1940 Marina Militare 3 Days Acciaio is a Special Edition of one thousand units and it is supplied with a brown leather strap with ecru stitching and hot-stamped with the OP logo. In the fine pear wood box in which it is supplied there is a spare Plexiglas® crystal.

Thx Cru

Yeah, I love this one* It's still a mix of vintage Panerais; I've never seen a 1940 with the MM label but why not!
*Could do w/o the ecru lume, but it seems to be impossible as of late...

Here's the typical 6152/1 with MM...

The above are all examples of sterile MM dials; of course, there's the coveted "4 liners", to borrow a term from the Rolex camp

no credits given, taken from Jake's Panerai World

I am slowly learning about Panerai so excuse my ignorance but what makes the dial "Marina Militare" specific? I was under (the now realized false) presumption that what made a dial "Marina Militare" was that the subseconds hand was next to the 9 as opposed to replacing it.

I like this watch because it is a beautiful base Radiomir 1940. I don't get what the "Marina Militare" signifies other than markup value.

Hi Evan,

I just published an article on Jake's Panerai World that likely answers your question:

www.PaneraiMagazine.com

Also, if you have not read it before, my story titled "The Complete History Of Panerai, The World's First Professional Diving Watch", sheds much light on the fascinating history of Panerai:

Cheers!!!

Fabulous article. This is why I love this forum. I hope my post wasn't coming off as accusatory towards Panerai. Obviously given my signature I am a fan.

It is easy to get ahead of oneself in this sport. 372 is probably still my favorite modern Panerai to date.

Despite Jake's excellent article, the answer may be much simpler than the article may lead you to believe; what you're thinking of is the "Luminor Marina" label - that is OP's designation for Luminors with a sub-secs dial.
