312 vs 1312

I was maybe two months away from getting a Panerai 312 ( I used to own one and miss it ). I've always said if they made the 372 in a 44 mm it would be my favorite watch. I know the new 312 isn't that but I love the aged hands and hour markers. Don't know if I love the blue seconds hand and "automatic" on the dial. What do you all think?

I have a 312. The only thing I am not really a fan of is the Automatic on the dial.

Other than the "Automatic" on the dial I really like it. I think its going to be more comfortable since they made it 2.3mm shorter. If it sits anywhere as flat as a manual PAM then it will be an improvement.

Yeah, that is one thing I always was bothered by. It sat too damn high.

well guess Panerai listened and decided to give the 3XX series a diet...the 312 was my first panerai but the thickness killed it...
nice to see them make advancements..but I am not big on the "automatic" and the aged lume...why not just keep the old lume and dial in a thinner package? the blue is a nice touch but it makes it less formal...

guess you can't ever have a total "win" with panerai...

New thinner case? Nice!

Fake patina lume? Enough already. Big fail compared to the 312.

Touch of blue? No thanks.... Just something that will clash with straps. Imagine a rich burgundy gator... Fantastic on a 312. Bad on the 1312.

So, overall, while the watch will be more wearable, I would have much preferred a 1312 that was identical to the 312.

As for automatic, it makes sense on Panerai to differentiate from the more historic manual wind.

Good job on reducing the thickness by 2.3mm - I could never get used to the thickness of the 312 relative to the case size. It caused the watch to be too top heavy, IMHO. I don't mind the aged lume on this model (I love it on the 372), but 'Automatic' on the dial and the blue second hand are a no go for me.

You should try a 372 on your wrist if you haven't already done so. I bet it's still more comfortable than the 1312.

Like others have said I also think the 'automatic' on the dial doesn't work. Panerai for me are beautiful because they are simplistic and minimalist. I like the blue hand but as Cru said, it would clash with different color straps.

I own the 312 and I don't find the thickness an issue. Initially I did think it was really think when I first tried it on at the AD, but now that I own it, it's fine. I have an 7 1/4-1/2 inch wrist so maybe that's why it works for me.

I wouldn't mind if it was thinner but hey I'm not complaining, so it's nice to see panerai are starting to go thinner. Am I annoyed that I've just found out they've realeased new models just as I've bought mine, kinda. But I wouldn't prefer the 1312 over mine.

I think the updated version is better. Love the new dial and the blue is a nice touch imo.

I have a 359 the original dirty dial and personally love the fake patina. I actually only like panerai's with the patina. I think the green is ok but the new 47mm sandwich dial patina are a true work of are.

Think I'm sticking with the 312. Don't like the blue hand or the automatic. As for the thickness, I don't mind it, meant to be a larger watch. I do want to try on the 372 again but my wrist is only 6 1/3rd.

You won't go wrong with a 312, its a great watch. Here are some pictures I've just taken for you of my brother wearing my watch, his wrist is about 6 1/2 inches. I agree about its supposed to be big.

Agree that the fake Patina is a bit off putting.

I love my 312 - cool blob o' metal that it is. Works well on my 6.5" wrist.

The quick change strap system is a godsend.

I must admit that I like my PAM's to be rugged, a 372, 557 or 233, 317, .....those are for me the true PAM's, if I want my PAM to be "dressy" I choose my PAM623.

I also prefer my watches, including my PAM's to be non-automatic and I don't like the word "automatic" on the dial.

As for the size, I'm fine with 47 or with 45-44, I tried smaller but I feel you loose the PAM DNA when you go smaller. A 574 is a lovely PAM but not for me.

I do however adore the variety of the PAM's out there and we can only praise Panerai for launching this new Due range.

I have seen a lotof negative comments on the WR of 30 meters, but that doesn't influence my decision, since I'm not a diver and I never swim with my PAM's.....

I would say. WELL DONE PANERAI !!!

One of my biggerst complaints with the 312/328 is that I could barely close my cuff with the watch on my wrist. The thinner 1312 is a perfect height but I also don't like the "automatic" on the dial

Agreed that cuffs can be an issue - depending on the cut of the shirt of course!

Proper dress shirts may be a problem...but I would argue this Pam wasn't meant for wear with starched white dress shirts. Most of my casual / Banana Republic type shirts are fine with the 312.

312 for me - I like a bit of heft.

I can take or leave the faux-tina of the 1312 (and other models), but not a big fan of the blue seconds hand.

I own PAM312, but I might exchange it for PAM1392 one day... I don't mind the "automatic" and blue second dial is really nice touch...

I was shopping for my first Panerai and was sure that i'd go with 312. Unfortunately that model seemed a little on the smallside of things and sat uncomfortable on my wris due to domed back.. The shop had a 422 and it totally blew me away. Perfect size and finish.
So back to our topic,a friend who knew i was shopping for a panerai just gifted me a 1312 today and i must say it sits on my wrist much better then the 312. If i were to be shopping for a 44 it'd be 1312 .
Now i dont know what to do with the 1312. Should i offer a trade up to the dealer for a 422 or not since its a gift. Ouch

Nice as an everyday watch...not a huge fan of the "ecru" lume.
If you're asking compared to 372....no doubt...372 is much more my style
