Saw a Daytona C today

At a reputable watch dealer in Orlando. (The place we were at Mon).
White dial, asking $18,000. I know where the watch came from and he paid $16,000 and had to buff an insription off the back. He claims Rolex has creased shipments of the watch to AD's. The whole thing is really crazy. Interestingly he had 4 or 5 old style Daytonas in the case. I've heard of people paying up to $19,000. Quite the hysteria.

Can’t be reputable if he’s charging over msrp. ADs are not allowed to.

You guys realize you’re calling a dealer with shady pricing strategies “reputable” right??? Regardless of whether he’s an AD or not, he’s buying from our guys and adding 2k then he has 5 old Daytona’s which he hasn’t moved. Why even bring it up? Why use the word “reputable”???

What's wrong with selling a watch at the current market price of you're not an AD? You invest 16k, you expect a return.

What do you want dealers to do? Sell at retail? The demand is set by what people are willing to pay and dealers have to stick to that. If the dealer charged 500 over retail someone would just buy it and sell it for 2000 over retail. All is determined by what the buyers will pay

What people need to understand is they are selling quite comfortably between 16-18k. You can't fault people making money off the demand/supply situation...is why capitalism works. So yes I would still call all the good trusted dealers around reputable by selling at these prices. If you don't like it get on AD lists and wait indefinitely with no guarantees. It is what it is.

Similarly, I find the argument the watches are all ending up getting snatched up by greys for profit laughable...it still gets to enthusiasts' hands selling at these prices...the greys are providing a service for watches the common public can't get easily.

That said, look forward to the next Daytona premium thread in about a hour.

Supply and demand. I don't want one. It there are plenty of people out there who will pay that premium to not wait in line (indefinitely) at most AD's.

At some point people don't have a choice.

Random guy walking into an AD is not going to get a Daytona. He will most likely never be able to get one.

Yeah, you could make the argument that non AD dealers are buying them all to sell for a profit, but it's not like those guys have an unlimited supply. I doubt even the biggest gray dealers would be able to meet the demand of all the people that want one.

Rolex is never going to make enough to meet demand. People who want them badly enough will pay the premium.

Whenever this happens, it's on the manufacturer. They create this secondary market by not meeting demand.

Well...I guess a guy's got to make a living somehow.

If he's got watches sitting around that he can't move, he's got to make a profit on something, right?

Which dealer is it, out of interest? I might be at a loose end in Orlando this week and wouldn’t mind browsing some watches. The displays at Millenia and the Florida Mall are both a bit meh in terms of SS pieces.

I'd check out one of the Trusted Sellers here instead. You could get a BNIB for around the same price.

The production if it has slowed (I'd be surprised though) would more than likely only be temporary, perhaps to ready their lines for Basel 2018 pre-production/development. Shipments usually slow around the Holidays.

Which is exactly what Rolex wants. Love it or hate it... it's intentional.

Of course.

I'm just glad I've never been a huge fan of the Daytona. At least not any modern version.

Rolex watch is a merchandise, free to buy or sell, not holy artifact which has whole religion behind it. Or is it... :)

At 18 or 19K used for the steel, many people may opt to go two-tone or even PM in the Daytona as the additional cost is not that much. Or so Rolex hopes.

Earlier this year I was in Macau and stopped by a Rolex boutique. Sitting there was a white dial Daytona C. By all indications, it was available for purchase right there sitting in the case. It wasn't in some back room waiting for some special frequent customer. At the time I thought nothing of it, but I should have bought it! And then I could have easily sold for these crazy prices.
