Is there a reason to a two colored bezel? Is it just for looks, or did it serve a purpose?

The original was a pepsi made for Pan American pilots by special request from Pan Am. The blue represented the sky and the red represented danger, just like the cockpit controls.

The black and red and the solid black mean nothing, they are just options later introduced for a variety.

I have heard that the darker color (blue/black) represented the 'dark hours' (nighttime) and the red/lighter color was for 'light hours' (daytime).

That makes more sense to me than the 'safe/danger' set up...but who knows.

You are correct sir! On a plane, safe is green, danger is red/maybe orange. I have never seen blue on any of my gauges, either old school, or the new computer flat screen gauges. The blue and red/burgundy and black are to signify the change from day to night.

Red/Blue also maybe to get patriotic american, british, french, norwegian buyers because of the colors. If they Rolex were reaally clever they'd use Blue/yellow like the Swedish flag, that would just make sense since the sun is yellow

... but then again I'm Swedish

The sun rises at 6:00 and sets at 18:00 on the equator. The red is for the daylight hours 6am to 6pm and the black/blue for the hours of darkness - 6pm to 6 am. Pretty useless if you live off the equator but it does allow you to see 15 minute segments at a glance.
