Skydweller - Chunky!

I put my name down for the new SS Skydweller a couple of months ago and had the opportunity today to try it on in precious metal for sizing.

This is a chunky watch. I wonder if people, who may not be into the bigger watch trend and who intend on purchasing will be disappointed by the overall size? I would definitely recommend trying a PM version on in advance if you get the chance.

I think it will be a pass for me.

Disclaimer: This is not a subtle attempt to get people to take their names of lists to increase my chances!

Watch: What's on my wrist
Posts: 33,256
I tried one on and it is at the upper limit for my wrist. Having a 42mm Tudor Grantour, a DJII, an Omega 42mm PO, and a Breitling SuperOcean Steelfish X-Plus (44mm) all of which I wear comfortably, I don't foresee a problem even with my relatively small wrists. I have to admit that I traded away my SubC because it wasn't as comfortable for me as my 14060 but that wasn't the only factor. Also at issue was the sterility of the design.

I would imagine at least for those receiving the watch early on that it won't be too much of a problem selling theirs if they don't want them and decide the watch isn't right for them.

One addition for me; sometimes a watch's appropriateness for the individual isn't only about dimensions; sometimes it's about desire.

I played with one when it was first released a few years back and just did again when the SS came out on tour..still A LOT of metal on my 6.5" wrist...less overwhelming than the DSSD but still wears very large...

still..a beautiful piece...

It's not especially chunky for an AC watch.

It's going to feel a lot chunkier in the heavy precious metal. I would suggest waiting to try an actual SS aka white Rolesor model on prior to any conclusions.

OP, Do you mind if I ask your wrist size? And which watch/size do you find most comfortable? Just asking for relative comparisons...I don't think I will have access to a PM Sky Dweller to try on. The AD (a boutique in a corporate chain) is giving me pushback with the notion that I am not going to out-of-hand buy the watch (if they get it in) without trying it on.

That could be true. The solid gold bracelet was quite weighty.

6 and 3/4 inch.

By way of comparison, I have a SubC and a 41.5mm Omega AT which both sit well. Naturally it also wore bigger than say the DJII. Now it is not a massively thick watch, but definitely surprised me.

Not that I should have been surprised given the complications the watch has.

I was pretty excited about these until I saw their dimensions. If it were the same size as a DJ41 I'd seriously consider one, but they're just too big for my tastes.

It is definitely a big watch for 6.75 inch or smaller wrists- a no go for me

Good point

Tough to cram that complication into a smaller case

It's bold no question about it. Still nice if you have the wrist for it.

My Tag is about 44mm and 16mm thick, a little big at times on my 6.875 in wrist, but then again, I don't wear it as a daily...

It's pretty funny how you see Sky and Yacht2s on so many athletes, artists and actors of all types and sizes from around the world... yet you come here and you'd think everyone is still living in a 36mm horology world.

Aside from the deep sea, rolexes are not big. At all. Not chunky. At all.

I saw pictures of the SD and was crazy for them, but when I realized the size, I realized it was too large for me. Whatever athletes and actors do, a watch larger than 40mm is too large for my taste (7 inch wrist). My 41mm Tudor Black Bay is pushing the threshold for me. I wear a 36mm DJ without embarrassment.

i didn't find it chunky at all and in SS i actually found it quite a bit lighter than i was expecting it to be when i tried on a demo model.

It wore quite nicely and i could get it under a dress shirt cuff no problem

Personally with the complications and how the second time zone is displayed I think it would be too cluttered and hard to read if the dial was any smaller. For this watch, the size is necessary for its design. You can debate if a sea dweller needs to be 43mm as that was upsized for no other reason than to be bigger, but not the sky dweller. Not that either being big should ever be considered bad as people have different tastes.

A lot of people talk about how thick the DSSD is. I've never measured the SkyDweller. But it is pretty close, if not as thick a DSSD.

Y'all drive me crazy sometimes!

the DSSD is super top-heavy and the sky dweller wears no wear near as thick. I don't know the exact measurements but i don't think its that close.

Edit: DSSD is 22% thicker. 17.7 vs 14.1

I tried a PM last week at the Wempe NYC store and thought it was a perfect fit for my 7.3" wrist, really liked it.

No doubt an impressive and commanding watch. Sits well on my 7.5 wrist. Size did not bother me. Does sit a touch high.

Still undecided about the model. Really like the way it looks and the complicated movement. Plus a nice variety of dial options. Just seems a little "dressy" for me. Kind of sits in the middle of a sport and dress watch. At least that is how I view it. That is maybe not a bad thing. Dual purpose I would guess for some.
