New vacheron 5500v vs New AP royal oak chrono

Which would you prefer? The VC is $3000 more but it now has a fully in-house movement compared to non-inhouse AP. VC also has exhibition case back and 3 straps with quick change system vs steel case back on royal oak.. I wonder if this new VC will hold value better due to in-house movement. It seems to offer a lot more than the AP these days.

the 3rd gen VCOs can be had for at least 25% off their ridiculous RRP – doubtful that value retention is going to be any different from the previous generations’ models.

The VC will retain less value than the AP. The ROC has remained largely unchanged since it was introduced. Therefore the older ROC watches still look modern today and go for quite high prices. If you would have bought a ROC 10 years ago you would have made a profit if you sell today.

The VC however has updated the Overseas many times and the older models with the bracelet w/o the Maltese cross now look quite dated. These can be found for relatively low prices now. However, value retention should not be a decision in your buying, rather in where to buy, i.e. AD or grey market. But buy what you like.

For me the decision was the AP:

The AP. The new improvements in the VC are nice but I can't get over the increased thickness of the case.

AP for looks and almost certainly value retention although neither will be strong.

I've never warmed up to the VC bracelet.

AP's 26300 at 39 mm is the best of the bunch, the date placement of the 41 mm give away the fact that the caliber is too small for the case. As for the VC: Last generation's OS chronograph was the closest they ever came to a popular model or a "look". But instead of a gentle update they tossed the big date for the generic chrono date at 4:30 even though its an inhouse movement, something I will never understand.

Likely the new Overseas will retain value like the old model, not particularly well. Comparison between the two is a matter of taste but the VC is larger and thicker, though it offers the quick strap change system a higher WR.

I will be in a minority here, but VC would be my choice in a heartbeat, whether it's new in-house model, or previous with Piguet movement and big date.
Of course, both are pretty awesome watches!

Both wont hold value, VC is known to depreciate and can already be had at discount if you look around.
Buy the one you like and will wear long term. If you want to retain value - get a Daytona

I probably wouldn't go for either to be honest. What about these chronos do you like?

You can actually walk into an AD or boutique and try on a SS chrono and buy right then and there if you want.

I like the chrono function and date function for daily use. I also like metal bracelets and the pedigree of the brands. I like that they aren't so bling that they cant be worn daily. I like the price point. I like chronographs in general. I like white dials.

I sold my VC chrono and just purchased a RO chrono-- pride of italy version. So you know my opinion. Both have closed backs, which if open would have changed my opinion.

I prefer the three-hander AP RO to the ROC, and I prefer the previous-gen VCO to the new one.

I actually waited for the new VCO's introduction prior to making my purchase decision, so that I could see which one I like better, and the old one won: I like the dual window date at 12:00 more, dislike the sharper taper of the new one's bracelet, and particularly dislike the washer-like disc below the bezel, which imo simply has no good reason for being there; the quick-change strap on the new one is nice, though.

If choice were restricted to these two models based upon value retention, I'd go with the ROC as it will likely be better.

Not sure it hold value better than the AP, but that VC would be choice.

Even considering I own a ROC.

The straps, movement and exhibition back... I just think it's a better package and it will be more exclusive, there won't be a zillion special editions, etc

I have a lot of APs and am a massive fan but on this occasion I go VC. I have never owned a VC and I think they have really lost their way in recent years with many of their designs but this one could tempt me.

I own first generation versions (VCOC 49140 and ROC 25860) and have followed the evolution of both chronographs. They seem to have moved closer to each other in looks now that the VC has very thin hands and a date at 4:30. When I was considering these watches, I couldn't make up my mind and bought both. But if it ever came down to having to only have one, especially a modern one, I'd lean towards the VC because of the in-house movement, quick change straps, greater WR, and better antimagnetic properties. Both are overpriced and the AP will hold its value better, mainly because more people want an AP.

Just tried the blue version of the new VC Overseas Chrono and have to say was very impressed. If I can find one with a suitable discount, will probably take the plunge.

VC and why

I have ownded both the Pride of Italy AP, a blue 39 ROC and the 2nd gen VC chrono. I was disaponted in the AP, it scratched to easily and had poor water resistance. THe 41 fit slightly too large and the 39 slightly too small. I thought the VC fit perfectly, just found the dials slightly boring. I am actually waiting for a two tone VC gen 2 right now. As far as resale, the VC is terrible and must be bought at a sufficient discount to make it worth while. I also took a hit on the Italy as I had bought it new. The 39 roc was sold at a proift , but bought used and well. Hope it helps.

What is odd is that the US and Hong Kong retail prices are very different (USD28,900 vs HKD239,000). In the US it seems that 20% discount is easily achievable, but supply of the blue one looks a little tight.
