I'm just a tournament player myself for Hold em. I used to play 7 card in Vegas back in the day. I miss that game. Doubt you can find a 7 card poker game anymore.

Love hearing these stories!! I'm working on my tournament game, but my main problem is that I'm forced to keep playing once I'm tired. The antes and rapid blind increases put crazy pressure when I would have just cashed out in a cash game. How do you you tourney guys address this?

Depends on the structure and starting stack and your mentality about varying your play, not nevessarily in a range balancing way, but more for value. Blind stealing becomes crucial in the later levels but you need to pick your spots and decide how you will handle a 3-bet or shove.
Try not to let pressure force you to shove light and think of your chips in term of BB's for the next several levels. Eric Sidel played incredibly patient from a short stack in the super high roller bowl and ground to 4th I believe, when he was already short entering the final table.
If you don't like longer events, avoid the Quantum Reload at the Bike! I hate that format with a passion!

Which variants do you guys usually play? I assume it's mostly NLHE here right? Any 2-7TD specialist or PLO players here?

My preference is LHE but it runs maybe once a year in the room closest to me. I wish I could say I was a good PLO or hi/lo player but it is a very hard game to play well! It is a shift a lot of players are making though.

Love this thread! If we keep it up I can stop visiting 2p2!

For the OP, or anyone for that matter, do you put much study time in? A lot of guys do these days, but it's hard with a full time job!

I only have a deep understanding of NLHE. PLO is super interesting and action packed, but I don't dare sit down with the grinders with my money on the line, at least not until I get more stripes under my belt!

Depends on if you play live or online. Any variant is hard online but I'd say RIO is a good place to learn about a lot of the theoretical stuff. Splitting up ranges and that short of stuff

Get amongst it and learn. Maybe try and get an understanding of certain spots before playing bigger but you can easily learn playing smaller. But be prepared to have swingy session because just the shear amount of variance.

This is vague but you're never really in terrible shape pre flop. Equities run super close but when getting your money in, just make sure you're not being dominated

Same here, I prefer home games over the card rooms...too many people there trying to make a living at places such as Commerce and the Bicycle Club.

We've had a game with a group from where I used to work that's been going for 30 years. I got into it about 23 years ago when they kicked out one of the guys for cheating. Still 4 of the 8 original players...we try to get together once a month for what we call "redistribution of the wealth". Now one of the players has a restaurant, so when it's available, we play in the private dining room, good food, gone wine, and a good game.

Got invited to a high stakes private game this past weekend. Had a good time, and came away a winner. Looking forward to future games.

Wanted to check in and see how the BR challenge was going. My hopes of being able to stay away from 2p2 were short lived. Haha

I grew up playing bridge so I'm used to counting cards and calculating who has what in their hand. So I started playing poker when I joined the Army and people thought I was cheating because I won more often then not.

I haven't played bridge or poker in years but still enjoy watching games. People say I have "card sense."

I'm a small time no limit player. I play about 2 times a month at the local casinos here in San Diego.

Usually I buy in for 200 and cash out 500-700. I been playing for about 17 years.

Hey I didn't notice this thread come back up in November, but I've been running well during the times I've been able to go. For Oct-Dec, I'm about another $10k! Lately I've only been allowed to go around once a week at most.

Winnings is currently at ~$20k since August.

Here's a photo of last night!

I bought in $1,500, bled down to around $700 for the first 3 hours. Then built back to $1,600, where I tripled up with AA in the hole! Sweet! It was a $3,500 profit session. I'm debating if I should move up to the 10-20 tables to try and maximize profits, or stay at 5-10 where I'm doing very well...

Nice work growing your bankroll!

Since you said the magic words "Maximising Profits":

Right idea, but kind of vague.

Maybe better to state it more precisely: I think you wish to optimise your rate of bankroll growth.

If this goal definition sounds good, then no need to debate anything. Let the Kelly Criterion make this decision for you. Because Maths. :)

You must now have a pretty good idea of your present edge playing 5-10. You know your bankroll size. So you can figure out whether or not you are still able to grow your bankroll at the optimal rate with your current 5-10 limits.

Obvious Caveat if you determine that you should move up:

You may or may not possess the same edge as you move up to 10-20 tables. Only one way to find out: exploratory skin in the game.

I'd stay at the 5-10 where you're winning rathe than step up to the 10-20 where you haven't tested your range and could lose bigger. Maybe you could step up for a session and see how it rolls but you've worked too hard to build your bankroll up just to lose it playing above your range. But that's just me and I'm tight.

I played A LOT back when I was single and winning big meant a lot to me. It was as much an ego thing as it was about the money. Now it's just ego. I played in some games against real pros, guys I recognized from TV. Not huge stakes but sometimes those guys play down to test themselves against a wider pool.

I'm a tight player. I'm not really good at a cash game no-limit. I've had some good runs but when it comes to no-limit I do much better in tournaments.

Now, I actually love playing limit hold 'em. It's a faster game and I hate to sit there while 2 dudes stare each other down for 15 minutes over a single call. I'm usually the youngest guy at the table by 30-40 years but it's an easy game and I almost always win. I dont get too bent or of shape when someone chases and hits runner-runner and I lose $3k (because I'm usually only in for $50-100 at most). I like to play where they have big bad-beat jackpots that hit most often on the low-limit tables where 7-10 people see the flop. I play a lot better post flop. It's more like bingo but I'm a middle age married guy. Who am I trying to impress?
