Official Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Thread

After a cursory and unsuccessful search of this forum, I'm going to go out on a limb and open this official thread for Oyster Perpetual Date owners.

I know that the DateJust is much more popular, but the Date is fine watch in its own right.

Here's my 1503!

It might well be.

I think there are others out there, but the question is, where are they?

Very nice watch, love that bezel. I have a DJ, and forgive my ignorance but what are the principal differences between the two?

Basically, two millimeters. The Date is 34mm and the classic Datejust is 36mm.

Beautiful examples, both.

Mine is my first Rolex with other than a black dial and I'm very pleased with it.

Forgive me for asking but I have always wondered this. My brother has an 80's DJ and just as in these 34mm photos the crystal is much higher then the bezel. Is this common in the older watches or only the case with non rolex crystal? Sorry for the newbie question.

P.S. I thought everything was an oyster perpetual, happy to have learner there is another model besides the DJ which was made and the main difference is 34 vs 36 mm.

The so-called "Top Hat" crystals are acrylic and preceded the sapphire crystals.
Not all Rolex watches are Oyster Perpetuals. Perpetual stands for automatic movement. For a long time, there were manual models available and the Cellini line has never had Oyster cases.

Interesting, thank you. When did crystal become standard roughly?

Are the manual models sought after?

I'd like to help you there, but for specifics, you'd need to ask those questions on the vintage forum.

Wondering if anyone can tell me roughly when my watch was made. It was my wife's late father's watch, he died 17 years ago and just found it. Seems to run fine :) We guessed late 70s to early 80s. Will eventually have the bracelet removed to see the exact serial/model number. But wondering if anyone could give us a ballpark age beforehand. Thanks!
