Is the grass greener?
Hi All,
I have a GMT (116710) and a Speedmaster tintin, I was interested in adding a Panerai to see what it is like on that side of the fence (there is my only tie in to my post title, ha). I really like the 177 and 564, I understand the differences between each and really think I would be equally happy with either, though I have not seen a brown dial in person. I have actually never even tried on a Panerai, so I have to do that first. The aspects I really like about both models are the brushed case/bezel, sandwich dial, seconds hand and manual wind. Titanium is a great feature as well, but not an absolute requirement. Does anyone have any recommendations for similarly spec'd steel option in the Luminor Marina, 44mm spectrum? I also like domed crystals, if there were an option that had it all. It is tough to discern differences between all of the Panerai models! Thanks! |

I have recently bought the Zeros and loving it. Prior to this I am wearing SubC, GMT IIC and Black Bay.

You've focused on two superb models that reply perfectly to your criteria (but, the 177's dial is black).
* Pros for the 177: cheaper to buy and service, initial depreciation taken by someone else, no "8 DAYS" on dial. * Cons for the 177: necessarily used (unless you somehow score an NOS), less of a power reserve than the 564, black dial (if you want brown). * Pros for the 564: 8-day power reserve, can buy it new, brown dial (if that's what you're looking for). * Cons for the 564: will be more expensive, "8 DAYS" on the dial. Good luck with the choice! |

I’d stick with the 6497 based movements and shy away from the 8 day in house.

I’ve only read about consistency issues. Fast or slow depending on PR. 6497 isn’t a stellar movement. It needs service more often than a Rolex 3135 for example, but it is fairly rugged and easy/cheap to service. I’ve owned many and they have treated me well. I’ve never owned an in house Panerai but have known many who have. Some had zero issues, others it seems when there is a problem, it seems hard to fix.

I also own Tintin. Great little watch to have.
With regards to Panerais. I have 2 models 000 which is so called base model and discontinued 162 chrono. Never had any issues with neither of them, both keep good time and look great. If had to choose only one in my stable it would be 000 for versatility, simplicity and Pams look. It measures 44 mm and surprisingly does not wear that big. Below wrist shot my wife wearing 000 and me wearing 162 Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk |
