Building AD purchase history

I am trying to build my history with an AD to improve my chances of securing a SS Daytona.

In your opinion offering to buy a SS GMT as part of this history a bit like offering a man to take out his second daughter on a date as the dowry on his first?

None of the SS sports watches will do anything to help your relationship to any great extent, certainly not a GMT. Jewellery and PM is the only relatively quick route.

Asking for other hot sport models isn’t going to help your cause. Buy a few pm and diamond pieces for your wife and then ask for one. Or just pay the 6k premium and buy one from a trusted seller. It’s really not worth waiting 10 years to save 6k IMO!

Buy from a trusted grey dealer. No point in buying stuff you don’t want to get something you do.

I get that the after market premium is high, but that’s the watch’s market value. The AD is selling you a below market value watch and will make up the difference somehow before they part with it. The premium is effectively the opportunity cost of procuring the hype piece. It’s already baked in one way or another.

I disagree from experience. Bought a SS sports piece as my first, which established purchase history to put me on the list for a Daytona. White dial SS Daytona came second and a year later. All depends on AD.

It’s a shame as I’d rather buy from an AD & have the experience rather than order something online & have it arrive by courier.

For a brand like Rolex that refuses to be officially sold online this does all feel rather ironic.

See post above, very doable to establish purchase history with SS. However differs based on AD/location

Well I did buy a replacement bracelet for my Submariner there. They also valued my Sub & Daytona 116520. So they have me in their system already but they’re a big chain (Bucherer).

Bigger chain makes availability easier. Get on the list for a Pepsi then a Daytona and you’ll likely have both 2 years

Depends on AD and you. I wouldn’t be too optimistic about it.

Yup.

Stop dreaming. Even buying history of gold Rolex will not get yiu the SS Daytona. Either they either like you or not.

I have lots of good relationships and the best 4 watches in SS came from an AD that I had bought 20 years ago about 20$k in watches. But they like me I know I am easy to deal with collector. They don’t usually give a hot SS model in one calendar year.

Go grey and get what you want in no patience. And if no interested in getting a Day Date.

Everybody would rather buy these watches from an AD. It’s free money.

I have been buying watches from my friends for 12 years now, multiple pieces. That is history. Buying a watch is just being a customer

I don't think that's a great strategy to build history.

I'll buy BLRO or BLNR and then put me on the list for ceramic daytona SS. Not going to fly. Telling the AD I’ll do you a favor by buying the second hottest watch in order to buy the hottest. Dream on.

Buying a bracelet and getting your watches valued does not in any way equate to history

A SS Daydate?... Perhaps only one exists, as they say, from many decades ago... You won't be able to buy it at an AD though.

I've only purchase very hard to get SS models... It took a lot of persistence. You are better off paying the premium... Youre not getting a Daytona with a purchase of a gmt very unlikely

Asking to be listed for two hot watches might get you categorised as a flipper.

If you desperately want a particular watch, just buy it. Where from and how much doesn't matter if you must have it. If you would like one and are frustrated that they are extremely difficult to get, join the club and the queue.

This week I got on the list for the SS BLRO. This is a cause for celebration and just shows what a state we are in. It's laughable. Although I was offered a BLNR out of the safe, so never say never.

IMHO most all of this so called AD relationship history stuff only exists in internet land,as all ADs are in business for one thing only, to sell as many products from there retail store to any Tom,Dick or Harry who walks into there store with the cash to buy.And today as most Rolex watches are thought of as little more than £££$$$ and mainly because of internet hype many watches like the Daytona are hard to get at retail. In many ways the WIS type has made a rod for his/her own back,as on the grey market there are most of these so called hot watches for sale at crazy greed prices to those willing to pay.

The thing is I’m neither frustrated nor desperate to acquire one.

I’ve owned a Daytona before (was stolen). I currently own a 16610 which I bought from an AD for my 30th (11 years ago pre-nuts).

So I don’t have an itch to scratch let’s say.

I like the watches but not the market.

I’m on the list for a AP RO 15500ST. If that comes in before I find a Rolex on my terms I’ll be out of the market for a while.

Also living in Geneva now the past 10 years gives me a different perspective of the industry.

Building a relationship is simply done over many years .A two way street .

What we have now ,is quickie "relationship builders" because they want to get hard to gets in a hot market .
These questions are all the same and frankly, quite boring .

Would it help if you find a sales agent who can be brutally honest with you and advice on ways to achieve your goal? I’d rather have it that way than being led around in circles. You can then evaluate whether those options match your direction for watch collecting, else just move on.

Even within an AD, different sales agents have different agenda, targets and customer base.
