Icon5 Problems with threading on the forum

Just wondering... Am I the only one who runs into problems with threading in this forums software?

That is, posts often show up as replies to the wrong posts. Is it just that it is hard to tell which post you are replying to? It would be easier if the posts were indented so the threading can be followed.

What I have been doing to try to ensure that I reply to the intended person is: I click the "Quote" button at the bottom of the post I wish to reply to, and then if I don't really want to quote the poster, I just clear the entire contents before entering my reply.

This is important to me because I use the "subscription" method of tracking replies to my posts. I don't stay logged into the forum, but I watch my e-mail for replies. Often I get e-mail with replies from someone who meant to reply to someone else's post, but instead replied to mine. Of course this means that often when I post something, and someone means to reply to me, but instead they reply to someone else, I never get an e-mail alerting me to the reply.

Anyone have ideas how we can improve this situation? It's not so bad when we only have 10-20 active users, but as we grow, it will become a big problem except for the few who read every post on the forum.

Thanks for any ideas.

I don't know if there is a solution, but I agree that if the post falls under the intended person it was meant for it would be MUCH easier to follow and flow while reading. Can this software do this?

Well, you can see the threading order in the post summary for a thread. It shows the indenting when someone replies to a particular post, rather than the original post.

The problem is that when you view the actual posts on the screen, you can't follow the threading.

If people were careful about how they reply, then it wouldn't be a problem. But we know from "somewhere else" that people aren't always so careful where they put their replies. ;-)

You can go into your usercp and select hybrid mode for thread displays. That should fix your problem.

Thanks, Mark.

Will that stop people from responding to the wrong posts too?

Yes, I enjoyed Bondoo7. He has a bit of trouble playing along with humor sometimes. He's also yet to learn that nobody enjoys hearing outright insults to other people.

Still, he has his place in the food chain over there.
