5205r-011 or 5172g-001

Looking to purchase either the 5205r green dial or 5172g blue dial as my first Patek. Any pros and cons to both? Both are brand new and priced the same from a grey dealer though the 5172 is new old stock (dated 3/2021). I actually prefr the looks of the 5205 as I like rose gold but the 5172 is not bad either. Any thoughts?

Those two references are quite different, one is an automatic annual calendar moonphase dress watch while the other is a manual winding chronograph that's much more casual. Both are lovely but for different reasons, I would say go with your gut when you see them and choose based on which one you like more/would wear more often.

It's a very nice project to consider.

I'll not paraphrase what Butt said but I think the same. I believe the solution is to handle them both while thinking about how you would experience them, practically, during your day time, at work, on week-ends, etc...

Patek's chronographs are really something and I love the 5172 especially in blue. However, as it's manual you'll have to think about winding it everyday or if it's just a week-end watch for instance. The movement is a little marvel to look at.

The 5205 is very practical on that matter, with the date, etc... And it also has a more classical look. The green version is very nice looking if you think you can also like it on the long run, on a regular basis on your wrist.

Go with 5205R, as you mentioned you prefer the looks and like rose gold.
You have answered yourself :)

I personally prefer the 5172 for 2 main reasons, and a few smaller ones. Part of the appeal to me of a fine watch is the complexity and finishing involved in its movement. The 5172 imo has a much nicer, more visually impressive movement. There’s something very pure and historical about a finely finished horizontal clutch chrono movement. So, for me, that alone is enough to sway me to the 5172.

But also, the 5205 is a strange watch in that it wears small. Smaller than its 40mm size implies. This is because the bezel is wide, making the dial seem small. Imo it looks like a38-39mm watch. Yet it sits fairly tall, almost chunky.

The 5172 is 41mm, wears like a 41mm. Lays flatter on the wrist imo.

Now, if you’re one who prefers smaller watches, the 5205 might suit you better. If you’re like me and prefer a 40-42mm over a 36-39mm then you might prefer the 5172. Both are great watches.

Some people really like a manual wind watch that you need to wind every 2 days give or take. (Almost 3 days technically, 65 hours) There’s something to be said for the ritual and the tactile feeling of winding a manual watch. There’s also something to be said for the ease of an auto. That is something to really think about.

Finally, the 5172 has surprisingly usable lume. No trouble reading the time in bed if you wake during the night, or in a movie theater. If lume matters to you, big plus for the 5172.

5172g blue dial for me! Chronograph is something you can interact with.

I would go with the 5172g blue dial. Hoping to receive mine next year. Love the versatility (casual or dress up), pure chrono only with no date and with manual wind. A wonderful experience to wind it every 2-3 days.

Between these two, the 5172. Substitute the 5205 for a 5960 I could be swayed.

My advice is to get the watch you want. If you heart says to get the 5205, go for it. As an automatic AC, the 5205 is a more practical watch that you can wear daily and use the AC functions. Especially if you like the RG case, that may sway you towards this watch.

However the 5172 has a beautiful movement that you may want to look at if you get a chance to handle the watch. Patek has been known for their manual wind chronos and the 5172 continues the long tradition of making high quality chronos.

This is the perfect example of a situation where “both” is the right answer. These are both attractive watches with interesting and meaningful complications. If you like watches in this style, you’ll eventually end up with a calendar complication and a chrono (or a combination of both in one watch).

Have you considered a 5960 or 5905? A 5970 or 5270 would be even better, but obviously a very large jump in price.

I prefer the 5172 but sounds like you prefer the 5205. I would go for it.

These two are completely different watches.......personally I'd go with 5205 as addition as a beautiful calendar dress watch

Assuming that, you already have a chronograph in your collection, I'd go with the 5205 stated above.

Current collection: 1) Rolex Submariner(116610LV), 2) Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional(311.30.42.30.01.006), 3) Rolex GMT-Master II(126710BLNR), 4) Breitling B01 Navitimer 43(AB0138211B1A1)

Yes, I already have a steel Daytona and a Moonwatch so I am going for the 5205r.
