The 2nd gen 39mm (AKA long hands) was the best for me... until this year's 40mm came out.

It's not on the list, but definitely my 1016.

I must say I’m very confused by these poll results so far. If you ever read anything about the Explorer on this forum you’d think that anyone who liked the 39mm version had two heads! It was constantly bemoaned by many folks as being “out of proportion, too big, not historic enough”, etc, etc. And yet here it is winning the poll.

Good to see it getting some love as the 39mm Explorer is my favourite Rolex that I’ve never owned.

I always liked the 214270, but would love to get the 224270.

Hopefully that’s why they ditched it and added the 40. If the 40 has the same golden ratio design of the 36 it might work as a better scaled up alternative.
The 36 was perfection in design terms: everything in balance.
I honestly never understood this criticism and I know a thing orctwo about design. 36 is the right size for many people but is simply too small but modern standards for many buyers.

Agreed, the 214270 is legendary; near-perfect as far as no-date watches go.

I suspect that much of the criticism that the 214270 is supposedly “out of proportion” comes primarily from those that haven’t owned it, or possibly even tried it on. It’s easy to form an opinion from pictures that doesn’t hold up upon seeing the watch in the metal.

I’m personally biased to the 39mm mk2, but looking forward to seeing the new 40mm at some point.

I’d get a vintage, but a new 36mm at MSRP would be hard to pass up.

What is your favorite Explorer?

And just in case any members of the general public stumble across this thread, see the photo below. Clearly we are not crazy - they’re all different! lol

Seriously though, a masterclass in timeless design. Credit to Rolex where credit is due, this post-1016 Explorer design language has been consistent since 1989.

I voted for the 214270 (Mark II), but to be honest I've never seen an Explorer that I didn't like. The 39mm size is simply better for my arm -- especially according to my girlfriend.

My opinion may change, however, after I've seen the new 40mm model in real life. I think a wider bracelet could be a great change -- it certainly works on the Submariner -- although on the other hand I think Rolex made a big mistake by moving the word "Explorer" to the top of the watch face. I'm sure they did that for the sake of tradition, but in my opinion it ruins the balance.

I am going to give the 40 mm a try. I like the others but the sizing has never been good for me.

214270 mkii for me. Absolutely perfect. On the small side as an explorer should be but without being feminine. Explorer text low on the dial is a better balance as well imho

Matte dial as well

Its hard to vote correctly because most of us havent seen the new Explorer in the wild or even as a comparison to the pre-existing models.

With Rolex, the question is always... " how big is a 40mm watch?". If I recall a "40mm Sub" is 40.3mm and a "41mm" Sub is 40.6mm.

Kind of how my 41mm OP is really 39.5mm. In fact, it wouldn’t shock me if they use for the Explorer 40 the same case as for the OP 41.

According to a hands-on review on Hodinkee.com, the new 40mm watch wears "substantially larger than the 39mm."

To be fair, the dude has a tiny wrist. But I don't really doubt it will wear larger than the 39 if it has more dial and less bezel. A shame they didn't have a 39mm to compare it to but seems like they just had a few minutes with it.
